Matadors Fall to Long Beach State in Big West Semifinals
4/21/2018 12:35:00 AM | Men's Volleyball
LONG BEACH, CA – The CSUN Men's volleyball season came to an end in the Big West Tournament Semifinals Friday night as the Matadors fell in straight sets to top-seed Long Beach State 25-23, 25-13, 25-17 at the Walter Pyramid.
CSUN concludes the season at 16-11 while the host 49ers improve to 25-1 and advance to Saturday first-ever Big West Conference Championship against No. 2 seed Hawai'i.
In his final match as a Matador, senior Arvis Greene led the team with nine kills, hitting .185 on 27 attacks. Junior Dimitar Kalchev added five kills, two aces and two digs and Maciej Ptaszynski chipped in four kills on .500 hitting.
The Matadors played well in the opening set, falling 25-23 despite being out-hit .407 to .296. The two teams traded sideouts for the first 16 points when CSUN took advantage of a pair of Long Beach hitting errors to open up an 11-8 lead.
A Greene kill kept the lead at three (12-9) and the Matadors still maintained a two-point edge at the media timeout. A pair of 49er kills tied the score before a Long Beach service error gave CSUN its final lead of the night at 16-15. The 49ers tied the score at 16 and lead from that point on, although the Matadors managed five more times, the last at 22-22.
After a 49ers timeout, two straight TJ DeFalco kills forced a CSUN timeout at 24-22. Kalchev's saved one set point before Kyle Ensing's cross court kill sent the hosts to the 25-23 win.
The Matadors fell behind 7-2 early in the second set and never fully recovered. One of Long Beach's 10 team aces opened up an 11-5 cushion and CSUN would only get as close as four points the remainder of the set.
Needing a win to stay in the match, the Matadors surrendered the first five points of set three. Back-to-back 49er blocks extended the lead to 9-2 and CSUN ultimately trailed by as many as nine.
"Obviously we were looking for a little bit more in tonight's match," said CSUN head coach Jeff Campbell. "In the first set we had some opportunities but in sets two and three Long Beach played really well and you've got to give them credit. They're a good team and they served really well."
Kyle Ensing led the 49ers with 10 kills (.350) while TJ DeFalco added nine kills and four aces.
