Acosta Throws Five-Hit Shutout, CSUN Takes Series from Hawai’i

HONOLULU---Behind a shutout from Matt Acosta, CSUN Baseball (19-24, 7-8 BWC) posted a series victory over Hawai'i with a 2-0 triumph on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium. Acosta allowed just five hits, striking out five batters for his first career shutout. Trevor Casanova reached base four times, collecting two hits and an RBI while Kevin Riley drove in the Matadors' only other run. The Matadors have now won two road conference series in a season for the first time since 2013.
Acosta's shutout was the first for a CSUN pitcher since Andrew Weston blanked UC Riverside last season. It also marked the first time CSUN has shutout an opponent on the campaign.
After the Matadors pounded out 16 hits on Saturday against the Rainbow Warriors, CSUN turned to its pitching to take the rubber match on Sunday. Acosta, who had pitched six or more innings twice this season, was brilliant throughout the afternoon.
Acosta retired the first two batters of the game before giving up a single to Adam Fogel. From there, he would baffle the Rainbow Warriors with outstanding work on the mound. The junior right hander proceeded to retire the next 11 batters in a row until Ethan Lopez hit a one-out double in the bottom of the fifth. Despite the extra base hit, he rebounded nicely by retiring the next two batters to end the fifth inning.
On the flip side, CSUN stranded two runners on base in each of the first two innings until breaking through in the third. Casanova kicked off the frame with a walk and Albee Weiss followed with a single to left field. Nolan Bumstead sacrificed both runners up a base before Riley hit a groundball to the right side, scoring Casanova.
It turned out the one run would be more than enough for Acosta. After the double from Lopez in the fifth, he set down the next seven batters. Going back to the first inning, he retired 18 of 19 Rainbow Warrior batters at one point. Hawai'i hitters hit seven groundouts over the span as Acosta recorded four strikeouts. In the bottom of the seventh, Kekai Rios stroked a two-out single to center but Acosta forced Lopez to flyout to retire the side.
The Rainbow Warriors' best chance to score came in the bottom of the eighth as Alex Baeza led off the inning with a double. After Acosta retired the next batter, Dylan Vchulek reached on a bunt single to put runners at the corners with one out. Maaki Yamazaki stepped to the plate next and hit a groundball to short. Alvaro Rubalcaba gobbled the ball up, stepped on second and fired to first base in time for a crucial 6-3 double play to keep Hawai'i scoreless.
CSUN added a key insurance run in the top of the ninth to extend its lead to a pair. Justin Toerner, who collected four hits in Saturday's win, doubled to start the inning. Toerner later reached third base on a wild pitch before Casanova hit a sacrifice fly to put CSUN ahead 2-0.
Acosta returned back out for the ninth inning looking for the complete game. In the frame, he retired the Rainbow Warriors 1-2-3 to secure the shutout victory. Throwing 111 pitches on the day, Acosta's previous season-high in pitches came against Pepperdine on March 11 when he threw 96 in a six-inning outing.
Casanova collected his 18th multiple-hit game in the victory and extended his hitting streak to 14-straight games. Also in the Hawai'i series, Toerner hit .385 (5-for-13) with three extra base hits while Riley Conlan batted .400 (4-for-10). After going 4-for-7 in the series, Casanova improved his batting average to a team-best .393 (22-for-56) in Big West play this season.
The Matadors continue their seven-game road trip next weekend at UC Santa Barbara. The series opens up Friday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m.
