CSUN Offense Breaks Out in 12-7 Win Over Hawai’i
4/29/2018 1:51:00 AM | Baseball
Starting in the leadoff spot, Toerner would have a game to remember. Tying a career high in hits (4-for-6), Toerner finished a double shy of the cycle. In the third inning, he gave the Matadors the lead with an extra base hit.
After Rubalcaba singled and Brandon Bohning walked, Toerner stroked a triple into deep center field that gave CSUN a 2-0 lead. Moments later, Trevor Casanova hit a sacrifice fly that stretched the Matador advantage to three runs.
Hawai'i would chip away at the Matador lead, beginning in third as Johnny Weeks hit a sacrifice fly. An inning later, the Rainbow Warriors took advantage of two CSUN errors to take a 4-3 lead. Chayce Ka'aua and Alex Baeza each collected RBI hits while Dylan Vchulek broke the tie with a sacrifice fly to center.
Now trailing, the Matadors wasted little time countering with a rally of their own. The Matadors loaded the bases with one out on singles from Riley, Riley Conlan and Alex Hull. Two batters later, Bohning earned a game-tying RBI the hard way after he was plunked by pitcher Brody Hagel-Pitt. Toerner stepped to the plate next and quickly turned the game around on one swing of the bat. Turning on an 0-1 pitch, Toerner deposited a grand slam into right field to suddenly give CSUN a four-run lead. Albee Weiss later added to the lead with an RBI double, capping a six-run frame.
Blake Schriever recorded the final two outs in the fourth and pitched a shutout fifth and sixth to maintain the lead. However, Hawai'i fought back in the seventh. Weeks collected a two-run double in the frame to pull the Rainbow Warriors to within 9-6. Cassius Hamm would put out the fire by retiring three of four batters, leaving a pair of runners on base in the process.
Riley added to CSUN's lead in the eighth on a sac fly but Weeks matched that run with a sacrifice fly of his own. Hawai'i would load the bases with two outs in the eighth inning before Jayson Newman retired Kekai Rios on a flyout to right.
The Matadors picked up a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to extend the lead to 12-7. Rubalcaba kicked off the scoring with a solo home run to center field before Toerner added to his RBI total. Needing a double for the cycle, Toerner laced a single to right field, scoring Bohning from second base. On the play, the ball got away from right fielder Adam Fogel, resulting in Toerner advancing to third base. Fogel was charged with a two-base error as Toerner was awarded with just a single.
Newman returned back out for the bottom of the ninth and surrendered a pair of hits before setting down Vchulek to nail down his first career save. In all, Newman worked 1.1 shutout innings, allowing just the two hits. Schriever (3-0) earned the victory after going 2.2 innings, giving up a pair of runs.
Toerner's seven RBI are the most from a Matador since Rubalacba accomplished the feat last season against Purdue (3/10/17).
Weiss notched his 12th multiple-hit game of the year while Riley collected his 11th after going 3-for-4. CSUN's number eight and nine hitters, Rubalcaba and Bohning, reached base a combined six times as the pair scored three runs apiece. Casanova extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single in the fifth inning.
The Matadors and Rainbow Warriors will play in a rubber match on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. (PT).
