CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - Senior Felix Mory made a final round charge to finish seventh while the CSUN men's golf team also placed seventh at the 2018 Big West Championship Tuesday at the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms.
The Matadors improved their team score each round. After opening with a 305, CSUN fired rounds of 288 and 286 to finish the championship seventh at 879.
"Overall, I'm happy that we battled after playing so poorly in the first round," said CSUNÂ Head Coach Jim Bracken. "We played it out and passed UC Riverside today, so I'm proud of the guys for finishing with a couple of really good rounds."Â
Mory, who was tied for 23rd with teammate Tomas Skajem after an opening round 74, moved up to 11th Monday before closing with his second straight two-under 70 to finish in a tie for seventh. The defending Big West individual champion had three birdies and six pars over his opening nine holes and made the turn at three-under. Mory added two more birdies but also had three bogeys on the back side to finish two-under for the day and the championship.
Junior Joey Varnam also steadily climbed the leaderboard after an opening round 80. Varnam matched the CSUN low with a one-under 71 on Monday before closing with a team tournament-low four-under 68 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for 21st at three-over 219. Varnam's final round 68 was his career-low for 18 holes.
Skajem also had his best round of the championship Tuesday as he closed with an even-par 72. Skajem, who led all players in the championship field with 41 pars, posted rounds of 74-76-72 to finish 26th at six-over 222. Senior Trym Falch tied for 35th at nine-over 225 after posting scores of 78-71-76 while sophomore Michael Zhang finished 43rd at 23-over 239 following scores of 79-77-83.
UC Irvine captured the team championship by one shot over UC Davis while the Aggies' Ryan Han defeated UCSB's Brandon Bauman for the individual title on the second hole of a playoff.
Mory will now wait to see if he is awarded an individual at-large berth into the NCAA Regionals for the second straight season when the NCAA Championship field is announced Wednesday. The 2018 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships selections announcement will air at 6 p.m. ET, on Golf Channel, during Golf Central, and streamed live on the Golf Channel website. Â
