Matadors Fall to Cal State Fullerton 3-0

FULLERTON, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (26-28, 13-10 BWC) suffered a 3-0 defeat to Cal State Fullerton on Saturday afternoon at Goodwin Field, ending the Matadors' Big West title chase this season. Isaiah Nunez pitched a quality start, allowing three runs to go with four strikeouts over seven innings. On the offensive side, Brandon Bohning collected two of the Matadors' six hits on the afternoon.
Â
Pitching into the eighth inning, Nunez would do his best to keep the Matadors within striking distance all afternoon. Allowing 10 singles, Nunez walked none and stranded five Titan batters on the base paths in his longest outing of the season.Â
Â
In the first, Nunez allowed three hits but stranded two runners on the base paths. However, the Titans plated a run in the inning behind a one-out RBI single from Daniel Cope.
Â
Nunez found his rhythm on the mound after the Cope hit as he retired the next seven batters in a row before surrendering a two-out single to Ruben Cardenas in the fourth. The left hander though rebounded nicely by picking off Cardenas from first base.
Â
The Titans added to their lead in the fourth behind three singles. With runners at first and second base, Jace Chamberlain singled down the left field line to plate Sahid Valenzuela. Nunez would again limit the damage by inducing an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Â
On the flip side, Fullerton starter Tommy Wilson yielded four hits in his six innings of work on the mound. The Matadors would have runners on base in six of nine innings but Wilson stranded six base runners.Â
In the second, Riley Conlan walked and Joey Cooper singled with two outs but Wilson retired Alvaro Rubalcaba to end the threat. Three innings later, the Matadors again mounted a rally after Cooper walked and Bohning stroked a one-out single. Wilson would show poise on the mound in the fifth as he retired Justin Toerner and Trevor Casanova on consecutive flyouts.Â
Meanwhile, Nunez continued to plug away on the mound. In the sixth, he pitched around a one-out single from Cope. An inning later, he surrendered a leadoff hit to Chamberlain before setting down the next three batters in a row. Nunez would retire 10 of the final 13 batters he faced as he exited in the bottom of the eighth.Â
In the eighth, Fullerton pushed across an insurance run to build a 3-0 lead. Mitchell Berryhill reached on a leadoff bunt single against Nunez forcing head coach Greg Moore to go to his bullpen. After Hayden Shenefield entered the game, Cardenas stroked a double to left field, driving in Berryhill from first base. Shenefield retired the next two batters before surrendering a single to Jake Pavletich. CSUN went to its bullpen once more, bringing in Blake Schriever who retired Jairus Richards for the final out.Â
The Matadors looked to rally once more in the top of the ninth as Conlan stroked a one-out double to right center field. Fullerton reliever Brett Conine though retired Cooper and Rubalcaba in order to seal a Titan victory.Â
Bohning notched his 14th multiple-hit game of the season and his second straight in the series. Casanova, who collected his 75th hit of the season, has now hit safely in 45 of 54 games.Â
The Matadors and Titans play in the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.Â
