Matadors Drop 3-0 Decision to Host Broncos at Boise State Classic
9/14/2018 3:42:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho - The CSUN Matadors came away empty for the second consecutive match Friday after being swept by Boise State in match two of the Boise State Classic at Bronco Gym.
In taking a 25-14, 25-17, 25-16 victory, the Broncos committed just six hitting errors to hit .356 as a team. Conversely, the Matadors connected at a .105 (31-19-114) clip as senior Aeryn Owens put down a match-high 14 kills.
Owens rebounded from a rough morning match against No. 13 Washington by hitting .220 on 41 swings to go with nine digs and a pair of blocks against Boise State.
CSUN's other hitters; however, struggled in the loss as no other Matador had more than four kills. Redshirt junior Brianna Johnson and freshman Nicole Nevarez each had four kills with Nevarez and freshman Lexi McLeod each serving one ace.
Senior setter Erin Indermill registered 13 assists, five digs and a career-high three kills while senior libero Kristey Markle had a team-high 11 digs.
After Boise State scored the first point of the match, Owens connected for a kill and followed up with a solo block to give CSUN a 2-1 lead. Another Owens kill kept the Matadors in front 3-2 before the hosts scored six straight points forcing a CSUNÂ timeout.
The Matadors battled back to get within 9-5 before a 3-0 Bronco run gave Boise State its largest lead of the set at 12-5. CSUN answered with a 4-0 run to pull within 12-9 but the Broncos came back with a 4-0 run of their own to push the lead back to seven at 16-9. Owens' seventh kill of the set temporarily trimmed the Boise State lead to five (18-13) but the Matadors could get no closer.
The second set was knotted at 5-5 when the hosts outscored CSUN 6-1 to open up an 11-6 cushion. The two teams traded sideouts following a Matador timeout before a 3-0 Boise State run extended the lead to 18-10. CSUN scored twice out of a timeout to trim the lead to 18-12 but the Matadors would get no closer the rest of the set.
In the final set, CSUN claimed the first three points and still led 4-2 following a Johnson kill. But a 5-0 Bronco run quickly erased the Matador lead and the run eventually swelled to 14-2 giving the hosts a sizable 16-6 lead.  CSUN engineered late runs of 5-0 and 3-0, the last trimming the lead down to 20-16 before Boise State claimed the final five points of the match.
For the Broncos, who improved to 7-2, Sabryn Roberts and Janell Walley each had a team-high 10 kills.
CSUNÂ wraps up the Boise State Classic Saturday morning as the Matadors take on Portland at 9 a.m.
