Matadors Fall in Straight Sets to No. 13 Washington
9/14/2018 10:56:00 AM | Women's Volleyball
BOISE, Idaho - The CSUNÂ Women's Volleyball team opened the Boise State Classic Friday morning, falling in straight sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-17) to No. 13 Washington at Bronco Gym.
The Matadors (4-6) had trouble getting their offense on track, hitting .030 as a team (24-21-101). Junior Morgan Salone was a bright spot for CSUN, putting down a team-high seven kills while hitting .400 on 15 attacks. Salone also tied for team-high honors with three blocks.
Senior Aeryn Owens, CSUN's leader in kills, was limited to five kills (-.045) but did share the team lead with seven digs. It was just the second time in her last 38 matches that Owens has failed to reach double figures in kills. Senior Nada Dragovic chipped in four kills (.000) while two other Matador hitters had three kills.
Hannah Merjil and Erin Indermill combined for 24 assists in the loss as CSUN was out-hit by the Huskies .270 to .030.  Â
"I thought we passed and served extremely well but we weren't able to stop their offense," said CSUN Head Coach Jeff Stork. "We knew where they were going, we just couldn't stop them. We need to learn to stay in the moment and make the next contact the best it can be. I'll be curious to see how we rebound against Boise State."
After Salone's kill pulled the Matadors within 12-10 in the opening set, a Husky kill and a CSUN hitting error pushed the lead back to four at 14-10. A co-block from Brianna Johnson and Nicole Nevarez followed by an Owens kill again cut the lead to two (14-12) but the Matadors surrendered a 9-0 Washington run which ultimately sealed a 25-17 Husky win.
A Johnson solo block had CSUN within 5-4 in set two. A pair of Washington kills followed by a Husky hitting error kept the Matadors within two at 7-5 when Washington engineered a 10-0 run which all but sealed the set. After a pair of CSUNÂ timeouts, the Matadors temporarily trimmed the lead to nine (17-8) following a Husky hitting error. CSUNÂ would get as close as eight (21-13) after a Dragovic-Johnson co-block but Washington opened up a 2-0 lead following the 25-14 win.
The Matadors were within four (19-15) following a Lexi McLeod kill in the final set before the Huskies closed the match on a 6-2 run to take a 25-17 victory.
Samantha Drechsel led Washington (7-2) with 11 kills (.167) while Kara Bajema added 10 kills on .368 hitting. Â
CSUNÂ plays its second match of the day this afternoon at 1:30 p.m., taking on the host Boise State Broncos.
