LMU Defeats No. 13 CSUN 2-1

LOS ANGELES—Loyola Marymount defeated No. 13 CSUN 2-1 in men's soccer action Thursday night.

The Lions (2-6) got on the board first in the 15th minute. Will Dubay's corner kick was sent in to Geraldo Lopez. Lopez headed the ball in front where Kris Fourcand found the ball in the scramble and would score his first goal of the season.

Taking advantage of a free kick opportunity, Loyola Marymount extended the lead to 2-0 at 52:23. With the ball crossed from left to right, Bjarki Ragnar dribbled into the CSUN zone and his shot from the close right of the Matadors' net went in.

CSUN scored with 4:10 remaining in the second half on Daniel Trejo's team leading sixth goal. Trejo punched his fourth shot of the game from close and center of the LMU net for the tally. Andrew Rizeq and Jordan Kinoshi were credited with assists.

A pair of shots from Trejo and Rodriguez in the 87th minute would result in a Giovanni Aguilar corner. The ball was sent in to towards the Loyola Marymount goal where LMU netminder Paul Lewis grabbed it out of the air for the possession. The Lions' CJ Neville was issued a yellow card with 2:13 to go, giving CSUN a free kick. The attempt was taken out of the air by Lewis, ending the final Matadors' offensive threat of the evening.

"We got humbled tonight," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "The team that wanted it more and executed their game plan better won the game."

The LMU win broke a six-game losing streak while ending a three-game winning streak for the Matadors. CSUN outshot Loyola Marymount 15-12. The Matadors also held a 9-5 advantage for shots on goal. CSUN posted eight corner kicks, compared to one for the Lions. Â

CSUN (6-3) hosts the University of San Diego (3-4-2) Sunday night. Kick is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed by the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health and BigWest.tv.
