Matadors Fall in Nailbiter to Reigning BWC Champion Hawai’i
1/13/2019 10:07:00 PM | Women's Tennis
HONOLULU -- Sunday saw the first competition of the Big West season for the 2018-19 women's tennis team as CSUN lost a close match to 2018 conference champion Hawai'i, (4-3) in Honolulu at the UH Tennis Complex.
FINAL SCORE:
CSUN vs Hawai'i
Honolulu, HI (UH Tennis Complex) Jan 13, 2019
Hawai'i 4, CSUN 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
"This was an incredible collegiate tennis match. We are so proud of how hard our players fought for each other. We came out a bit over amped in doubles and Hawai'i played very well. We put it together quickly in singles, however, as Sibel, Ana, Jolene, and Skyla won first sets. Sibel did not look like a freshman and finished strong. Ana came back down from four points to win, she is a very special freshman as well. Emma and Monika played really well too and it came down to Joelene, who showed toughness that very few freshman have. This team has a very bright future, and we are excited for all that is ahead of us."
FINAL SCORE:
CSUN vs Hawai'i
Honolulu, HI (UH Tennis Complex) Jan 13, 2019
Hawai'i 4, CSUN 3
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- UH kicked off the scoring by taking the first doubles match, after Maayan Sela and Nikola Dolakova defeated Skyla Alcon and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso, (6-1) in doubles #2.
- The Rainbow Wahine clinched the doubles point with a Alzbeta Houbova, and Michelle Pits victory over Sibel Demirbaga and Emma Roenholt, (6-3)
- In singles competition, Hawai'i looked to be in control early. Petra Melounova def Monika Van de Vondel, (6-4, 6-3) to give the Rainbow Wahine a 2-0 lead as they looked to cruise to a victory.
- The Matadors would not go down without a fight however, as in Singles #6, Sibel Demirbaga scored the first point for CSUN in the match with a victory over Sophia Storch, (6-2), (6-4).
- Hawai'i would take the next singles point on court #5, as Alzbeta Houbova defeated Emma Roenholt, (6-4), (6-4) to give the Rainbow Wahine a 3-1 lead.
- While in danger of losing their first contest of the season, CSUN responded in a major way. Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso defeated Nikola Dolakova, (6-4, 1-6, 7-5) to keep CSUN's hopes alive.
- The Matadors would then tie the score, off the back of Skyla Alcon, who defeated Michelle Pits (7-6 (7-4)) (2-6), (6-2) to force a match deciding dual between Maayan Sela and Jolene Coetzee. Coetzee won the first set, and forced a tiebreaker for match point in the second.
- Sela proved to be just a little too much, as she went on to take the victory (5-7) (7-6 (7-5)) (6-4) and the match for the Rainbow Wahine.
- Alcon, originally from Kapolei, Hawai'i, played in front of a large contingent of home fans cheering on her and the Matadors away from Northridge. She came down 5-2 in the first set and 2-0 in the third to get the much needed victory to force a final match on Court #2.
- Coetzee, a freshman, played in a tough match in her early Matador career, as it came down to her match to decide the final point. She came back from 4-0 down in the third to tie it up. "She showed toughness that very few freshman have," said coach Gary Victor.
- UH is the defending champion in the Big West, and has aspirations of repeating as champs. Hopes are high especially after an early season victory in their last match over Baylor, a team that is perennially a top 20 program.
- In the final match between Sela and Coetzee, both went back-and-forth in a deciding match that had both teams on the edge of their seats. Both players fought cramps and went down at various points in the third set.
