Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
- The Matadors limited the Highlanders to 2-for-12 shooting in the first quarter. CSUN forced nine turnovers which resulted in 13 of the 26 points that the Matadors scored. CSUN would lead 26-6 upon the conclusion of the first quarter.
- CSUN connected on three of its first five field goal attempts to continue to push ahead. The Matadors a 29-point lead, the largest of the opening frame, with 3:20 to play in the first half.Â
- After missing 18 of its first 21 field goal attempts, UC Riverside sank five of its last seven to earn an 8-1 run that made it 42-20 at halftime.
- The third period was a physical one as the teams combined for 14 personal fouls in the quarter. The Highlanders forced eight CSUN turnovers in the third quarter, giving UCR nine points. UC Riverside continued to chip away and got the Matador lead down to 15, 50-35 as the third came to a close.
- CSUN led by as many as 19 in the final period. Trailing by 17, the Highlanders used a 10-2 run to reduce the lead to single digits. Keilanei Cooper's three-pointer capped off the scoring surge at the 3:08 mark.
- Each team posted a defensive stop before Serafina Maulupe drove the lane and scored on a layup. She was fouled on the play. Maulupe sank the free throw for the old-fashioned three-point play and a 62-50 advantage.
- UCR closed to 11 on two different occasions in the final minute, but the Matadors who struggled at free throw line were able to make 5-of-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to win by 13.Â
FOR CSUN
- The Matadors held the Highlanders to 29.4% shooting for the game (20-of-68). In addition to it being the second straight game of 30% or lower for the CSUN opponents, it is the fourth time in 19 games this season, a Matador foe has shot under 30% in a game.
- CSUN drew 26 Highlanders' fouls in the game, going to the free throw line a season high 38 times. The 38 attempts are the sixth most in a game at the Division I level for the Matadors. CSUN only connected 23 of the free throw attempts, a 60.5-percent mark.
- Maulupe scored 11 of her team high 14 points in the first half. The 5-8 guard, who surpassed the 1,000 career-point plateau Thursday night at Hawai'i, was 5-of-6 from the floor, 3-of-4 from three-point range. She added four rebounds and a steal.
- Juliana Louis scored 11 points and tied for the team high in rebounds with Channon Fluker as the duo each grabbed nine off the glass. Louis also made three steals.
- Fluker struggled with the UCR double and triple teams. She only scored four points, but she blocked four shots, made two steals and had an assist.
- CSUN had 11 healthy players in uniform for the first time since the Nov. 28 game against California Baptist. 10 of the players scored at least one point.
FOR UC RIVERSIDE
- Malou De Kergret led all scorers with 20 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
- Marina Ewodo scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds while Cooper had 11.
- Daphne Gnapo snared a game high 15 rebounds, but CSUN would outrebound UC Riverside 48-38.
- The Highlanders forced 23 Matador turnovers, but turned the ball 19 times of their own.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH JASON FLOWERS
- "I thought we showed what kind of basketball team we can be in the first quarter. I would say that for 16 minutes of the game we played at a pretty high level."
- "Midway through the second quarter we got really cool on both ends of the floor and that is not going to get it done. The focus is playing every single position of every single game, no matter the circumstances and we didn't do that."
- "If you look in the context of the entire week, playing at Hawai'i Thursday, coming home tonight, we will take the wins. But there is a level of expectation to be a championship level team that we didn't meet in the second half. We have to be better and we will go back to work and get ready for a good team in UC Davis on Thursday."
