SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---No. 18 CSUN Water Polo concluded the opening matches of the 2019 season and the UCSB Winter Invite Saturday with back-to-back losses against California Baptist and No. 9 Michigan. The Matadors would fall 10-8 to the Lancers and 11-5 to the No.9 Wolverines.
Game One Recap
The Matadors were led in the first match by true freshman Kylee Jansen who tallied three goals, two earned ejections, and one steal in the opening match against California Baptist. Jansen capped off a comeback in the fourth quarter when she scored back-to-back goals with 2:39 left in the game to tie the score even at eight apiece. The comeback which ultimately fell short, was part of three unanswered goals for CSUN after falling down 8-5 at the beginning of the fourth. Jennalyn Barthels, Madasonne Butler, McKenzie Beardsley, Lindsey Garcia and Tori Wilson all scored in the game for CSUN.
First Half
For most of the first quarter, the match saw no clear favorite, with both teams scoring two goals in the first seven minutes of the game. Barthels and Garcia continued where they left off yesterday with goals early on the contest. Jamie Hutton and Kira O'Donell for the Lancers both netted goals in the last minute of the period to give CBU a two goal advantage after one. In the second quarter, the Lancers begun to pull away. O'Donell continued her great shooting with two more goals in the period, giving her four total for the half. CBU scored three times in the second half to give them seven in the contest. Jansen scored with :22 seconds left on the clock to cut the lead to four at the break.
Second Half
At the beginning of the third quarter, the Matadors planted a seed for the comeback. Holding the Lancers scoreless in the third, CSUN netted two goals thanks to Wilson and Butler to cut the lead to within two with one quarter left to play. An early fourth quarter goal by Katie Fugit bumped up the CBU lead to three with time running out. The Matadors would persevere, off the backs of a Beardsley goal and back-to-back Jansen goals to even up the scoring with little time left in the fourth. Junior Katie Quon for the Lancers would put them back on top after scoring her first goal of the contest with 1:54 left in the game to give CBU the lead. The Lancers would add another O'Donell goal, giving her five on the game, and seal the victory for California Baptist, 10-8. Emma Pfister added eight saves, a steal and an assist in the loss.
According to Head Coach Matt Warshaw
"The CBU loss was disappointing as we felt like we outplayed them but didn't finish the opportunities to score goals. Fighting back to tie with three minutes to go was a good sign but we'll never be satisfied with losing. Jansen had a couple nice goals, and it's a big jump to go from high school water polo to D-I and as a true freshman she's learning and improving everyday."
