2/9/2019 7:13:00 PM | Women's Water Polo
LA JOLLA, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo continued the 2019 season by splitting the first pair of matches at the 2019 Triton Invitational on Saturday. The Matadors fell early to the No.8 Wolverines and couldn't catch up, as they would go on to drop the match, 14-5. However, CSUN would rebound with a victory over No. 22 San Diego State, 7-3 to end the first day of competition.
Game One Recap
The Matadors were led in the first match offensively by Lindsey Garcia who tallied two goals in the fourth quarter. That quarter CSUN outscored Michigan 3-2, but would be the only quarter where the Matadors had the upper hand. Freshman Kylee Jansen continued her scoring streak by netting a goal in the second quarter. She has now scored in the first five games of her collegiate career.
The Wolverines piled on the offense early and it was too much for the Matadors to overcome. Michigan tallied five goals in the first quarter, shutting out CSUN in the process. Julia Sellers netted two goals to lead the team early on.
In the second quarter, Michigan continued their hot hand by adding four more goals, but not before Jansen and Maddasone Butler made their mark on the scoring column with a goal apiece.
In the third, the Matadors were shut out again by the Michigan defense. The Wolverines tallied three goals in the quarter all by different members of the No. 9 Wolverines.
Michigan would hold on to their lead in the fourth depiste being outscored, 3-2 in the frame. Emily Rittner would lead the team with three goals in the victory.

Game Two Recap
In the second match of the afternoon, the Matadors played a tightly contest battle with No. 22 San Diego State. CSUN would hold the Aztecs to one goal in the second half of the game as defense proved to be key in the Matadors' victory. Their three goals allowed were the least allowed on the campaign thus far.
CSUN kicked off the scoring with a Tori Wilson goal in the first quarter to give the Matadors' team its' first lead of the day. The Matadors added on to the lead with an Emma Franck goal to make it 2-0 over SDSU. The Matadors would hold SDSU without a goal throughout most of the quarter, but a late goal by Emily Bennett of the Aztecs would cut the lead in half with three quarters to play.
In the second quarter, play went back and forth with key defensive stops as both teams were able to hold their opponent to one goal apiece. Tori Wilson netted her second goal of the contest and to make it a 3-1 advantage for CSUN. Delaney Binette cut the lead in half again for the Aztecs, scoring with close to a minute left in the second.
CSUN would hold SDSU to one in the second half, with great defense by goalie Emma Pfister. She tallied five saves in the second half with eight total for the match. The Aztecs would actually tie the game coming out of the break off the back of a Bennett goal, her second of the contest. Jennalyn Barthels netted a goal from half court off a turnover that gave the Matadors the lead, and the momentum needed to push them toward victory.
In addition to the Matadors' best defensive performance of the year, McKenzie Beardsley, Rachel Fusco and Jansen all tallied unanswered goals to finish off No. 22 SDSU. Jansen has now scored in all six games of her collegiate career.
"We were disappointed with our execution versus Michigan, after playing them to a closer game a few weeks ago. For the team to bounce back with an important victory over SDSU showed their determination and ability to follow a game-plan," head coach Matt Warshaw said. "Tomorrow will be a great challenge, we get to start with a conference opponent in Long Beach State. Looking forward to competing."
