CSUN Loses OT Triller to Yale, 94-90
1/5/2019 10:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Despite a game-tying 3-pointer from freshman Lamine Diane to beat the buzzer in regulation, CSUN Men's Basketball (6-10) would fall to Yale in overtime 94-90 on Saturday evening at The Matadome. Diane scored a season-high 35 points and added 15 rebounds, four blocks and four steals while junior Rodney Henderson Jr. scored a career-high 23 points to go with five rebounds. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 23 points and four assists. The thriller featured 28 lead changes and 10 ties.
Diane's 35 points are the most by a Matador since Josh Greene tallied 37 against Hawai'i in March 2013. The freshman has surpassed 30 points three times this season and collected nine double-doubles.
"We've got to execute a little better on both ends of the floor," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "Defensively we had one or two breakdowns. Offensively, when the game's on the line, we've got to execute what we're trying to run. At times we did it really well and other times not so well. We certainly have been in position to win some games and our kids are playing extremely hard. We've got to get over the hump.
"We're getting better," added Gottfried. "When you look at when we started and where we are, we've played a really hard non-conference schedule for our team and it's made us a little bit better. Now the record goes to 0-0 going into league. Our guys have seen a lot, they've been tested and been challenged. I think we're a lot better than when we started but we just don't have as many wins as we've liked to have."
CSUN shot 39.0 percent in the game while Yale finished with an even 50.0 shooting percentage. From long range, the Matadors hit 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) compared to the Bulldogs who went 8-of-19 (42.1 percent). Yale out-rebounded CSUN 48-40.
In the first half, neither side led by more than three points until the Matadors went on a 7-0 run to take a 27-21 lead at the 7:19 mark. Yale would answer with a 7-0 run of its own to reclaim the lead before Gomez put CSUN back in front with a layup. Freshman Elijah Harkless gave the Matadors a spark off the bench as he nailed a jumper to stretch the lead to 34-30. Harkless finished with five points and three rebounds in 15 minutes.
Diane scored 16 and collected nine boards in the first half to lead CSUN. After a missed 3-pointer from Henderson Jr., Diane pulled down an offensive board and scored despite a foul. Diane converted on the old-fashioned 3-point play to stretch the lead to six but the Bulldogs hit a late free throw to cut CSUN's lead to 39-34 at the break.
After intermission, the Bulldogs scored the first seven points before the Matadors went back ahead on a Darius Brown II layup. Yale though built a 53-45 lead at the 13:18 mark after a dunk from Paul Atkinson. Moments later, CSUN responded with back-to-back 3-pointers from Gomez and Henderson Jr. In fact, the Matadors hit five consecutive 3-pointers at one point to take a 60-57 lead at the midway mark of the period.
The seesaw battle continued down the stretch. The Matadors trailed by a point before they scored five in a row, capped off by a breakaway dunk from Diane. Trailing by four, Yale forged a 5-0 run of its own to stake to a one-point lead with under a minute to go. From there, Diane gave the Matadors the lead once more on a driving layup but Bulldogs answered with the go-ahead basket from Jordan Bruner on the ensuing possession. After Bruner later made two free throws, the Matadors had the ball with two seconds left to play. Cameron Gottfried in-bounded and found Diane with a cross-court pass. Diane gathered himself and drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.
However, Yale opened up overtime on a 7-0 run and led for the entire five-minute session. The Bulldogs took a 92-84 lead with 42 seconds on the clock before the Matadors nearly completed a remarkable rally in the final seconds. Gomez completed a 3-point play before Harkless collected a steal, which led to Gomez hitting a 3-pointer with 15 seconds left. CSUN almost forced another turnover but the Bulldogs retained possession leading to a pair of free throws from Alex Copeland to ice the game.
The Matadors now turn their attention to Big West play set to begin next week. CSUN visits UC Riverside in both teams' conference opener on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game will air live on ESPN3.
