Matadors Open Big West Play at UC Riverside

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (6-10) visits UC Riverside to open Big West Conference action on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The game will stream live on ESPN3 while Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call in an audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
The Matadors played an overtime thriller on Saturday against Yale to conclude non-conference play. CSUN would send the game into overtime on a last-second 3-pointer from freshman Lamine Diane but Yale prevailed in overtime, 94-90. The Matadors nearly erased an eight-point deficit with less than a minute to play as they cut the Bulldog lead to 92-90. Yale though hit two late free throws to secure the win.
Diane recorded his ninth double-double of the season, scoring a season-high 35 points to go with 15 rebounds, four blocks and four steals. Junior Rodney Henderson Jr. scored a career-high 23 points in the game while sophomore Terrell Gomez added 23 points of his own with four assists.
CSUN heads into Big West play with six victories, the team's most since the 2013-14 season. During non-conference play, the Matadors earned their first win over a West Coast Conference team since Nov. 2012 with a victory at Pepperdine on Dec. 5. The team has played a host of close games thus far this season as 12 games have been decided by 10 points or fewer while eight have been decided by five points or fewer. The Matadors played a pair of top Mountain West Conference teams tough as they lost on a last second 3-pointer to New Mexico (Nov.6) and fell at San Diego State by five points (Jan. 1). CSUN also won the Las Vegas Classic Upper Division with wins over SIUE (85-79) and Rider (81-80) during Christmas weekend.
Diane heads into the Big West season as one of the top scorers and rebounders in the country. Diane is the only player in the nation to average over 24 points (24.3) and 10 rebounds (11.1) this season. The dynamic freshman is first among all freshmen in rebounds per game while he is second in points per game. He is also one of three freshmen in the country to average a double-double for the year. In addition, Diane leads the Big West in points per game, rebounds per game and blocks per game (2.5).
Other Big West leaders include freshman Darius Brown II, who leads the league in assists per game (5.1) and steals per game (1.8), and Gomez, who has averaged a conference in minutes per game (38.0) and 3-point field goals made (53). As a team, the Matadors enter league play ranked first in points per game (77.8), assists per game (16.5) and blocks per game (4.7).
CSUN leads the all-time series with UC Riverside 42-36 and has won four of the last five meetings. Last season, the Matadors defeated the Highlanders at the SRC Arena 66-57 but UC Riverside returned the favor with a 69-62 win at The Matadome. Gomez averaged 12.0 points and 5.5 assists per game against the Highlanders in the two games. CSUN has had recent success at the SRC Arena, winning five of the last seven meetings including three straight.

The Highlanders went 6-10 in non-conference play and won five of six games at the SRC Arena. Last Friday, UC Riverside thumped Bethesda 112-47 as the team set a new school record for points. Among the team's six wins this season, the Highlanders defeated Pepperdine (75-71) and Loyola Marymount (60-53). Head coach David Patrick is in his first season at the helm of the Highlanders.
Junior Dikymbe Martin is fifth in the Big West in points per game (15.9) as he is shooting 49.2 percent from the field and 44.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. Sophomore Ajani Kennedy leads the team with 4.7 rebounds per game to go with 8.3 points per game on 55.7 percent shooting. The team is ranked first in the Big West in 3-point made field goals per game (8.8) and second in 3-point percentage (36.1) and free throw percentage (70.6).
