
Comebacks Highlight Tennis Performance in Long Beach

LONG BEACH, Calif -The CSUN women's tennis team continued the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule when they traveled to Long Beach for the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament Oct. 11-13.Â
"This was a good outing for all our players this tournament," said head coach Gary Victor.
Ekaterina Repina opened up her tournament in Singles Flight A with two victories. Repina defeated Jenna Schlatter of UC Irvine, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round. In the second round against Washington State's Savanna ly-Ngyuen, Repina dropped the opening set 6-0. Repina rebounded by taking the next two sets, 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the Flight A semi-finals. Repina fell to Long Beach State's Natalia Munoz 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 in the finals.
Also playing in Flight A, Jolene Coetzee in Flight A, Coetzee dropped the first set to Zara Lennon of Long Beach State before coming back to earn the victory by sweeping the next two sets, 7-5, 6-2. Washington State's Pang Jittakoat ended Coetzee's tournament hopes in the second round in a three-set battle 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.Â
"Kat [Ekatarina] had an outstanding three-set win over Washington State after dropping 6-0 first set. Jolene came back to beat Long Beach after dropping a 6-0 first set. These comebacks speak to their toughness and persistence." Victor said.Â
In-Flight B, Emma Roenholt faced off against a conference foe in Cal State Fullerton's Alex Kalachova (CSUF), with Roenholt getting the upper hand in three sets 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.
In other Flight B action, Jacquie Tan opened up her tournament run with a convincing win over Neil Sunjic of Pacific (6-1, 6-0). The sophomore also scored a win against Long Beach State's Lalita Devarakonda in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). Tan would fall to Yang Lee of WSU, 7-5 6-2 to end her tournament in the semi-finals.Â
In-Flight C singles, Lauren Anderson began her tournament with four consecutive set wins, the first couple coming in a victory over Lauren Wolfe of UC Riverside (6-1, 6-1). Anderson would then punch her ticket to the semi-finals with a win over Carla Quadflieg of Washington State 7-5, 6-1. The junior would fall to Jadie Acideria of Cal State Fullerton 7-6, 2-6, 6-3.
 Lisa Marie-Wurst defeated Anna Oberg of Pacific to begin her stint in Flight C singles (7-5, 7-5) but would lose in the next round to Carla Casasempere of Long Beach State 6-3, 6-4.
"Jacquie played very well in beating Long Beach while Emma had an excellent three-set win over Fullerton. Lauren played some of her best tennis in beating Washington State and Lisa was strong in her win over Portland. We are competing with confidence and looking forward to the challenges ahead," Victor said.
The next tournament for the Matadors is the ITA Southwest Regionals from San Diego, CA, on Oct. 17-21.
