Second Straight Top-10 Finish for CSUN at Pacific Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. - Behind the first collegiate top-10 finish by freshman Mats Ege, the CSUN Men's Golf team posted its second straight top-10 tournament finish Wednesday at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
Ege, who led CSUN with a 19th-place finish at the Bill Cullum Invitational last week, carded a final round one-over 73 to finish a season-best 10th at three-under 213. Junior Gabriel Barnes had the Matadors' low round of the day, firing a two-under 70 as CSUN matched its team score from round two with a 290 to finish with a three-round total of five-over 869.
Six teams in the 16-team field finished under-par as San José State won the team title with a score of (-16) 848. The Spartans' Sean Yu claimed individual medalist honors with a score of 11-under 205, two strokes better than two players at nine-under 207.

"We didn't play poorly, but didn't really get anything going either. I'm still encouraged because we have a lot of team depth heading into the spring. We're a young team but the guys know they are going to have to play well if they want to play tournaments starting in February."Â
The tournament closes the fall season for the Matadors who will open the spring Feb. 6 at the Amer Ari Invitational at Waikoloa Golf Club.

CSUN SCORES
- Ege was even-par through his first eight holes Wednesday before a double bogey at No. 9 dropped sent him to the back nine at two-over. Birdies at No. 12 and No. 16 got the CSUN freshman back to even-par before he closed with a bogey and par to finish the day one-over and the tournament three-under.
- Barnes made the biggest jump of any Matador on Wednesday, moving up 17 spots into a tie for 28th at one-over 217. Barnes had two birdies and one double bogey in finishing the front nine at even-par. He then birdied three of his first four holes on the back nine to get to three-under before finishing double bogey, par, birdie, par, par to finish the day at two-under 70.
- Freshman Eirik Thomassen carded his second straight round of one-over 73 to finish in a tie for 34th at two-over 218 (72-73-73).
- Junior Blake Brothers posted his second consecutive round of two-over 74 to finish in a tie for 70th at 10-over 226 (78-74-74).
- Senior Michael Zhang, competing as an individual, finished with a final round four-over 76 to also finish tied for 70th at 10-over 226 (79-71-76).
- Sophomore Paul-Louis Gachet rounded out the CSUN scoring at he tied for 74th at 11-over 227 (73-78-76).
