Matadors Take on Cal State Dominguez Hills in Exhibition

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---The 2019-2020 CSUN Men's Basketball team continues its march toward the new season with an exhibition game on Monday against Cal State Dominguez Hills with tip-off set for 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health through BigWest.TV. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister are on the call for the broadcast.
The Matadors hosted a Black and Grey Game at The Matadome this past Tuesday where members of the team were divided into two teams and played two 20-minute games. In the first game, the Grey team defeated the Black team 46-37, led by sophomore Lamine Diane who scored 17 points while junior Alex Sokol added 12. In the second game, the Grey team led 45-43 with less than a minute to play before junior Lance Coleman II hit a game-tying mid-range jumper to send the game to a one minute overtime. In the OT, Coleman II came up big again, drawing a foul and hitting two late free throws to send the Black sqaud to a 47-45 victory. Senior Rodney Henderson Jr. led the Black team with 12 points in the win.
Head coach Mark Gottfried enters his second season at the helm alongside his experienced and accomplished staff of Jim Harrick, Jeff Dunlap and Mo Williams. The Matadors have 10 letterwinners this season and added four newcomers to the roster.
CSUN was picked to finish third in the Big West Preseason Media Poll, released on Thursday. The Matadors received 202 points in the poll with UC Irvine (258 points) edging UC Santa Barbara (256 points) for the top spot. Diane and junior Terrell Gomez were both placed on the Preseason All-Conference Team a season after earning spots on the All-Big West First Team.
The Matadors have not played Cal State Dominguez Hills in an exhibition game since the 2014-15 season when CSUN pulled out a 79-76 victory. The teams have played 30 all-time regular season games with most of those contests taking place when the Matadors were a Division II member alongside CSUDH. CSUN won the last six meetings in the regular season including an 80-65 triumph in their last game in Nov. 1999.
The Toros finished 14-14 last season and 12-10 in the CCAA. The team advanced to the CCAA Tournament but fell in the opening round to Cal State East Bay. CSUDH's top two scorers from last season have returned to the team, led by junior Colten Kresl who scored 12.5 points per game. Senior Wonder Smith added 11.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game last season for the Toros.Â
