NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The CSUN Men's Golf team opened the spring season Monday at the Anteater Invitational Monday at Big Canyon Country Club. The Matadors were tied for fourth place after an opening round 302 before play was suspended in the second round due to darkness.
Three CSUN players have two holes remaining when round two play resumes at 7:30 a.m. The 10 teams in the field will then open the third and final round.
Freshman Paul-Louis Gachet is the low Matadors after the first round, firing a two-under 70. Gachet began the round on the 10th tee and had one birdie and a pair of bogeys on the front nine before bouncing back with three birdies on the back nine to finish the day at two-under.
The remaining four Matadors had three birdies combined in the round as Gabriel Barnes, who is tied for 24th, had one on his way to an opening round four-over 76. Michael Zhang also posted one birdie as he is tied for 34th at five-over 77 followed by Luis Calderon in 41st (79) and Tomas Helgo in 57th at 11-over 83.
"It's a tough golf course but for us it came down to execution and bad course management," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "I thought we were a little rusty since it's our first spring tournament but we've got playing smarter and a little more conservative, Hopefully we can get in a good final round tomorrow."
At four-under, Grand Canyon leads the team competition by two shots over Santa Clara while the Lopes' Filip Lundell has a one shot lead at 69 heading into round two.
