Matadors Post Final Round 298, Finish Ninth at UCI

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Tomas Helgo fired a final round 69 to move into the top-20 while the CSUN Men's Golf team finished ninth at the UC Irvine Invitational Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.
The Matadors (910) carded a team round of 298, their lowest of the tournament by four strokes, to move up from 10th into ninth place among the 10 competing teams.
Helgo, who was 57th after struggling to an opening round 83 on Monday, closed with rounds of 70 and 69 to tie for 17th at six-over 222. Helgo posted three birdies over his first nine holes and was four-under after another three birdies on the back nine before a bogey on his final hole dropped him to three-under for the day and six-over for the tournament.
Freshman Paul-Louis Gachet was CSUN's low player after an opening round 70 but slipped into a tie for 42nd following an 86 in round two. He bounced back with a 72 on Tuesday to narrowly miss his best finish of the season after tying for 27th at 12-over 226.
The remainder of the CSUN squad finished in the lower half of the leaderboard as Luis Calderon finished in a tie for 43rd at 17-over 233, Gabriel Barnes finished in a tie for 53rd at 20-over 236 and Michael Zhang finished tied for 58th at 27-over 243. Calderon had his best round of the tournament Tuesday, finishing with a four-over 76 while Barnes (76) and Zhang (77) each had his low round on Monday.
Cal State Fullerton captured the team championship with a score of 863 which was 11 shots better than Grand Canyon (874). The Lopes' Filip Lundell won individual medalist honors by four shots after finishing at eight-under 208.
The Matadors continue the spring schedule Feb. 21-23 as CSUN makes the first of two trips to Hawai'i for the John A. Burns Invitaitonal.
