REDLANDS, Calif -- No. 21 CSUN Water Polo (4-6) won back-to-back matches at the Thompson Aquatic Center in Redlands Wednesday afternoon, with CSUN taking the first game in a 14-12 shootout against No.23 California Baptist and winning the second match of the day against Redlands convincingly, 16-8
CBU Recap:
In a back and forth offensive match between the Lancers and Matadors that ended 14-12, CSUN maintained and held a lead throughout the entire match, but holding it would not be easy by any means. Tori Wilson kicked off the scoring for CSUN in the first quarter, foreshadowing her best offensive day this season with six goals at the end of the match.
Wilson followed her initial goal with another to make it 2-0 with an assist from Jennalyn Barthels to put CSUN up by a pair early on. A Katie Fugit goal inched the Lancers closer, but a third Wilson goal made it a 3-1 game. Sara Dempsey added a goal and Kylee Jansen tallied one as well as CSUN ended the quarter with a 5-3 lead. Jansen has now scored in an impressive nine matches in a row to begin her collegiate career.
CBU outscored the Matadors 2-1 in the second period, putting the Lancers to within one at the break, but then the Matadors started to pull away in the third. Multiple goals by Wilson, and netted shots by Sara Dempsey, Emma Franck and Katia Andon-Mateos gave CSUN a four-goal lead to put them up 11-7. Another goal by Barthels with help from Andon-Mateos made it a 12-7 contest with one period left to play.
In a game that seemed all but wrapped up for the Matadors after a Maddasone Butler goal to make it 13-7, the Lancers came storming back to make it a close game late. The Lancers scored five in the quarter, including three consecutive from their attacker, Lizzette Perez. Perez chopped the lead down to two in the game's closing minutes to make it 14-12, but time was on the side of CSUN as the Matadors held on to the victory.

CSUN maintained a hold on the lead throughout the match, with great offensive plays and stellar defense in the first half to dictate the pace. The Matadors opened a four-goal lead at halftime before putting the game out of reach with eight goals scored in each half. Wilson and Butler led the Matadors with three goals apiece. CSUN also had thirteen assists in the contest. Emma Franck got her first start at goalie for the season and she managed nine saves, while adding four steals as well.
In a match that saw CSUN win by seven, the Bulldogs actually led twice in this game with both of their leads coming in the first half. Redlands took a 3-2 lead off a shot from Kelly Klish, but a quick powerplay goal from Butler tied the score once again, this time at three. The Matadors would actually score a total of six times in the period with help from Butler, Wilson, Sellung and Andon-Mateos as they all had even-strength goals to put CSUN on top 8-4 at the break.
In the second half, the third quarter was back and forth with Redlands actually getting the upper hand in the frame, outscoring the Matadors 4-3, and cutting the lead to three. Back-to-back goals by Hunter Oliverier gave CSUN trouble during that stretch. Jansen did have a goal in the period, extending her streak to 10 games to begin the season with a goal.
The fourth quarter proved to be too much for the Bulldogs to handle as CSUN stepped up their game on both sides of the court. CSUN shut out Redlands 6-0 in the fourth quarter to put the Matadors' stamp on today's performance. Dafne Garcia added two goals in the frame including a penalty shot to give the Matadors its biggest lead of the contest and the 16-8 win.
CSUN 2 - 6 - 2 - 6 -- 16
Redlands 1 - 3 - 4 - 0 -- 8
CSUN: Wilson (3), Butler (3), Garcia (2), Fusco (2), Barthels, Andon-Mateos, Sellung, Hughes, Marquez, Jansen
Redlands: Olivier (3), Kahahawai (2), Jenkins, Walker, Klish
According to Coach Warshaw:
"It was nice to get a rematch with a team we'd lost a game to earlier in the season, and show our improvements over the past month. In the CBU game, we got major contributions from key players, something that had been lacking in previous contests. Redlands plays a scrappy, hustle-style of play that kept us on edge. It was fun to see our team communicate throughout the first half and then pull away in the second."
Up Next:
The No. 21 Matadors will travel to Thousand Oaks to take on the University of Toronto and Cal Lutheran next Wednesday. The first match begins at 10:00 a.m.
