No. 21 Water Polo Wins Two at Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo (6-6) swept its two matches at Cal Lutheran on Tuesday afternoon. The Matadors defeated Toronto 11-8 in the morning match before routing host Cal Lutheran 15-8 to close out the day. Juniors Madasonne Butler and Tori Wilson led the way offensively on the day, tallying a combined six goals apiece while junior Katia Andon-Mateos racked up five goals. A total of seven Matadors hit the back of the net in the two matches. In front of the cage, sophomore Emma Pfister collected 13 saves in the two wins.

"It was a challenge playing a Toronto team we didn't know too much about, all and all a good learning experience with the win. CLU is one of the premier teams in the SCIAC Conference so to score 15 goals against them was a good sign that our offense is moving in the right direction."

Butler got the Matador offense rolling with two goals in the first quarter while Andon-Mateos hit the net as well to give CSUN a 3-0 lead. The Blues were able to rally back late in the first quarter after two goals from Alicia Vas but CSUN regained control in the second period. Kylee Jansen and Jennalyn Barthels each got into the scoring act with tallies in the second period while CSUN held Toronto without a goal for the final seven-plus minutes of the first half.
The teams traded three goals apiece in the third period as CSUN built a 7-3 lead early on only to see the Blues cut the deficit to 7-6 with 2:16 on the clock. Barthels would hit a goal in the final minute on a power play to push the Matador lead to two goals heading to the fourth.
In the final period, Butler opened up the scoring but Vas hit back-to-back goals to stretch her tally to six on the match. Andon-Mateos gave the Matadors some breathing room with a timely goal at the 4:11 mark, pushing the lead to 10-8. CSUN played strong defense down the stretch, holding the Blues to zero goals over the final 4:46 of the match while a late goal from Wilson sealed the 11-8 victory.
Pfister racked up five saves in the match while Wilson and Barthels picked up two assists and two steals apiece.

The teams battled in back-and-forth first eight minutes. The Regals scored to open the match but Andon-Mateos and Wilson hit even-strength goals to give CSUN its first lead. Wilson closed the Matador scoring in the first period but the Regals evened the match at 3-3 on a power play tally from Kaitlin Gardhouse.
CSUN would pull out in front in the second period, outscoring the Regals 4-1. Wilson broke a 4-4 tie with a goal at the 6:00 mark before Butler hit the back the net two minutes later. Barthels would capitalize on a power play chance, pushing the Matador lead to 7-4 at halftime.
The Matador offense exploded in the third quarter for seven goals to break the game wide open. Sellung had a hat trick in the third quarter alone while Anon-Mateos and Butler added to their scoring totals. Wilson completed the scoring in the period with her fifth goal with 20 seconds left to give CSUN a 14-7 lead.
Butler scored her third goal of the match in the fourth quarter, closing out a seven-goal CSUN victory.
Pfister had another strong match in net, picking up eight saves while Sellung notched four assists.Â

Over a three-day period, the Matadors will take on four nationally-ranked teams beginning with an 11:15 a.m. match against No. 2 Stanford. CSUN then will play two on Saturday before closing out the invite with one match Sunday.
