NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (10-15, 4-5 BWC) opens up a home-heavy stretch against Cal State Fullerton on Saturday night on at The Matadome at 7 p.m. The game will air live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health via Big West.TV with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call. The pregame show starts at 6:50 p.m. on GoMatadors.com/Radio.Â
The Matadors dropped a second-straight game last Wednesday night at UC Davis by the final of 76-59. After about a six-minute stretch where the Matadors led early in the first half, the Aggies went on a 10-0 run to take the lead. UC Davis would never look as the Aggies led by as many as 19 points in the second half.
Sophomore Terrell Gomez found his shooting touch from the outside, knocking down six 3-pointers en route to posting a game-high 24 points. The Big West' top scorer, freshman Lamine Diane posted 20 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Graduate Cameron Gottfried gave the Matadors a boost off the bench, finishing with seven points, six rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes.
CSUN enters Saturday sixth in the Big West Conference standings but just 1.5 games out of climbing into the top half of the conference. UC Irvine paces the league with a 9-1 conference record, followed by Cal State Fullerton (7-3), UC Santa Barbara (6-4), Hawai'i (6-4) and UC Davis (5-4). Just below CSUN is Long Beach State (3-7), UC Riverside (3-7) and Cal Poly (1-9). The Matadors will play three of their next four at The Matadome.
A number of Matadors are ranked in the Top 20 nationally in several categories coming into the weekend. At the top, Diane leads the nation in field goals made with 240 as he already has broken the Matadors' Division I record. Diane is also ninth in points per game (24.1), 11th in rebounds per game (10.7) and 14th in double-doubles (13). Gomez is sixth in the country in minutes per game, 10th in 3-pointers made (88) and 16th in 3-point field goals per game (3.5). Also in the backcourt, freshman Darius Brown II is ranked eighth in assists to turnover ratio (3.4).
As a team, the Matadors are first in the Big West Conference in points per game (76.7), field goals made per game (28.6), field goal percentage (46.7), assists per game (15.8) and blocks per game (4.5).
The Titans have won five-straight games over the Matadors including the last two at The Matadome. The teams squared off on Jan. 30 at Titan Gym with Fullerton prevailing 78-71. CSUN nearly erased a 25-point deficit but the Titans held on in the final minutes. Diane would have a tremendous game, scoring 39 points including 29 in the second half, which tied the Matadors' Division I single-game scoring record. Senior Khalil Ahmad led the Titans with 27 points. Fullerton leads the all-time series 45-34.
A Closer Look at Cal State Fullerton
The red-hot Titans (11-13, 7-3 BWC) have won seven of the last eight games with that only loss coming to first-place UC Irvine. Winners of two straight, the Titans beat Long Beach State, 85-82, to sweep the season series. Despite a strong 7-2 mark at Titan Gym, the team is 3-9 on the road this season but all three of those wins have come in Big West play. CSF is first in the Big West in defensive rebounds per game (28.4), second in field goal percentage (46.0) and opponent 3-point percentage (30.8), third in opponent field goal percentage (42.2).
Senior Kyle Allman Jr. and Ahmad are tied for second in the Big West at 18.2 points per game. Ahmad is also second in the league with 1.6 steals per game. Also in the Top 10 in the conference, junior Jackson Rowe is third in rebounds per game (8.0) and junior Austen Awosika is sixth in assists per game (4.0.) Rowe is also averaging in double figures at 11.0 points.
