Stellar Defense, Career High for Henderson Lead to Third Win in a Row
2/21/2019 10:41:00 PM | Women's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The CSUN women's basketball team notched its third win in a row as Meghann Henderson scored a career high 17 points in the Matadors' 60-45 victory over Long Beach State. CSUN held the visiting 49ers to 23.7% shooting, the eighth lowest field goal percentage by a Matador foe in the Division-I era.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: CSUN 60, Long Beach State 45
LOCATION: The Matadome, Northridge, Calif.
RECORDS: CSUN 14-12 (8-4 Big West), Long Beach State (7-18, 4-8 Big West)
HOW IT HAPPENED
"I thought we did some things better. I thought we did a pretty good job of contesting three-point shots. Anytime we hold a team to 45 points and close to 24% from the field, you know you did some things right. Meghann came out and played well. She has a lot of potential. She is starting to take care of the process. Happy for her to get the results. We as a team just have to keep going to work and keep getting better."

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CSUN got off to a hot start in the ballgame, opening the scoring on a 14-2 run that saw Channon Fluker grab six points and six rebounds in the game's first five minutes.
- Multiple three pointers by Henderson early set the tone for the Matadors, as she made three in the first quarter, including one to give CSUN the lead by double digits. She would be 4-5 from three in the contest.
- An LBSU three pointer by Shanaijah Davison cut the lead to eight at the quarter's end, but CSUN still looked in control of the ballgame.
- The second quarter proved to be maybe CSUN's best defensive quarter of the season.
- The Matadors came out of the break on an 8-1 ended by a Noami Hunt layup that happened to be the 49ers only field goal of the quarter.
- CSUN held LBSU to 1-15 shooting, and 0-6 from beyond the arc in the quarter.
- A De'Jionae Callaway layup from Lauren Shymkewicz gave the Matadors its biggest lead of the half at 28-13
- A Fluker layup from Henderson gave a 31-17 lead at the break, as Long Beach State only managed five points the entire second quarter.
- After a first half in which CSUN was clearly in the driver's' seat, the second half brought a little bit more back-and-forth action.
- CSUN picked up right where it left off after halftime initially ended, with a 6-0 run to begin the final half, and putting the Matadors up by 20, 37-17, their biggest lead of the game.
- LBSU followed with a 6-0 run of their own, cutting the lead back to where it was at halftime after a Kianna Hamilton-Fisher bucket.
- Even with LBSU scoring its most points since the first (12), CSUN added 14 in large part to contributions from Fluker and Henderson, who finished with 18 and 17 respectively to lead all scorers.
- The fourth quarter was CSUN's only quarter in which it was outscored, and the margin was only by one at 16-15.
- The Matadors held Long Beach State to 2-10 shooting from three in the final quarter, and kept the 49ers to 15.4 % 4-26 for the entire game.
- CSUN held LBSU to 23.7% shooting, the eighth lowest field goal percentage by a Matador foe in the Division-I era.
- The Matadors now have beaten the 49ers by a combined 29 points in both contests this season. LBSU has managed 82 points total for both games.
- With 18 points on the night, Fluker is now at 2,023 points for her career.
- Fluker would also grab four blocks, now has 15 in her last three games
- Henderson scored a career high 17 points, the most that she has scored since a freshman (14 points versus Idaho, Nov 24, 2017)
- Shanaijah Davison scored a team high 15 for Long Beach State while she also led the team in minutes on the floor with 38. Noami Hunt added 10.
- The Beach struggled with the CSUN size, scoring only eight points in the paint. Compare that to CSUN's 26 points in the paint.
