LIHUE, Hawai'i - Freshman Tomas Helgo fired his second consecutive round of even-par 72 as the CSUN Men's Golf team carded a final round 308 to finish 19th at the conclusion of the John Burns Intercollegiate Saturday at Wailua Golf Course.
Helgo, who began the day tied for 66th, moved into a tie for 57th at four-over 220. Helo had three birdies and was one-under through 17 holes Saturday before a bogey five at the par-4 12th dropped him to even par on the day and four-over for the tournament.
Paul-Louis Gachet had a pair of birdies but also had six bogeys on his way to a final round four-over 76. Gachet wound up posting rounds of 73-77-76 as he tied for 84th at 10-over 226. Michael Zhang, CSUN's low player through two rounds, struggled to a final round 82 as he tied for 95th at 13-over 229.
Gabriel Barnes, competing as an individual, tied for 104th at 17-over 233 following a final round 81, Ryan Hoffenberg tied for 108th at 18-over 234 after a final round 79 and Luis Calderon finished 113th at 24-over 240 following a final round 81.
"It was a frustrating day, we didn't execute and simply didn't play well," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "But we did get to see the course four times so hopefully we'll be better prepared for the conference championship in April."
No. 11 Arizona State captured the team title with a three-round 840, three shots better than second place Texas A&M.Â
CSUN will next play in the Bandon Dunes Championship (Mar 10-12) at Bandon Dunes GC in Bandon, Ore.
