PHOENIX, Ariz. - A solid opening day has the CSUN Women's Golf team in sixth place as round two of the GCU Invitational was suspended by darkness.Â
The Matadors opened Saturday with a team score of 303 and are currently seven over-par in round two with three holes to play.Â
Freshman Kiran Sangha got CSUN off to a great start in Saturday's morning round, firing a two-under 70 which is a season low. Sangha had two birdies over her first eight holes before making birdie at No. 1 and No. 3 to get to four-under. Three bogeys over her next six holes dropped her back to one-under before another birdie on her final hole moved the freshman to two-under.
Sangha, who is two-over with four holes to go in round two, is currently tied for fifth.
Brianna Steger and Ashley Phelps both carded an opening round five-over 77 which has both tied for 36th after 18 holes. Steger fired four birdies in round one while Phelps had three. Steger is at even par through 14 holes in round two while Phelps is three-over with three holes to go.
Michelle Duan and Kayla Yn made it all five CSUN players in the 70's as each carded an opening round 79. Duan scoreched the front nine with five birdies from holes three through nine but had triple bogeys on a pair of holes on the back nine. Yn did not have a birdie in round one but did have 11 pars.
Duan is two-over with six holes to play in round two while Yn is eight-over with three to play on Sunday morning.
"So proud of the Matadors today, we played with great energy," said CSUN head coach Gina Umeck. "It's just a lot of fun out there. We're having fun with the process and that's the point of athletics, really."
All teams will complete round two beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday morning with the third and final round scheduled to start immediately after.
