Matadors Beat UC Davis in OT Thriller
2/23/2019 10:11:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---On a night where freshman Lamine Diane set a new single-season scoring and field goals made record, CSUN Men's Basketball defeated UC Davis 81-76 in overtime on Saturday evening at The Matadome. Diane recorded his conference-best 16th double-double of the season, scoring 35 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to go with three blocks and two steals. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 20 points including 11 in overtime while junior Rodney Henderson Jr. chipped in with 15 points and five boards. The Matadors' win is the team's first over the Aggies since 2014, snapping an 11-game skid in the series.
With 655 points on the season, Diane is now CSUN's single-season scoring leader, surpassing the 646 scored by Brian Heinle during the 2000-01 season. In addition, Diane broke George Robnett's single-season field goals made record on Saturday, surpassing the 267 the Matador great set in 1973-74. Diane now has made 272 field goals this season. He is also within three of breaking the school's season blocks record set by Tre Hale-Edmerson in 2013-14 as Diane has 60 this season.
The Matadors shot 45.9 percent from the field while holding the Aggies to 37.7 percent shooting. CSUN went 10-for-23 from 3-point range (43.5 percent), compared to the Aggies who made 9-of-24 (37.5 percent). In the rebounding department, the Matadors out-rebounded the opposition 42-36.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH MARK GOTTFRIED
"I thought we grew up a little bit. It's finding a way to finish a game. What I liked was even through some mistakes and errors, we gave up two three's late in the game, we still found a way to get tough enough and execute. I thought Terrell in the overtime was just terrific, he made some big shots. We didn't fold, we didn't pout, we found a way to make some plays on both ends of the floor and we end up coming out with a good, tough, gutsy win."
FIRST HALF
Diane made the first two Matador shots to start the game and Gomez nailed a 3-pointer to give CSUN an early 7-2 edge. Minutes later, Jared Pearre tipped in a missed shot from Diane to push the lead to 11-6 at the first media timeout. The Aggies would score five unanswered to even the game as the score remained close for the remainder of the period. Diane shouldered most of the offensive load in the period, scoring 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting while Henderson Jr. gave the Matadors a lift off the bench with 10 points.
Henderson Jr. would score five-straight points to give the Matadors a 20-16 lead. Later in the period, The Aggies squared the game at 27-27 but Diane gave the Matadors the lead right back on a tip-in following his own missed shot. Diane then brought The Matadome faithful to their feet with a dunk off a feed from Darius Brown II. However, UC Davis went on a 6-0 run to take a five-point lead before Henderson Jr. made it a 36-34 at the half on a late 3-pointer.
SECOND HALF
The Matadors fell behind 39-34 but answered with an 8-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Brown. The 3-point shot continued to be friendly for the Matadors as consecutive treys from Brown and Henderson Jr., pushed the CSUN lead to 50-44 at the 11:21 mark. The Matadors led by as many as eight points in the second half (52-44) but went without a field goal for over eight minutes, which gave the Aggies a chance to rally back. Joe Mooney gave the Aggies a 54-53 lead on a pair of free throws but CSUN would take the lead back on a jumper from Diane at the 4:08 mark.
The seesaw battle continued down the stretch as UC Davis pulled to within 62-61 on a trey from Siler Schneider with 1:25 to go. After coming up empty on the ensuing possession, the Matadors came away with a key defensive stop. Diane grabbed the rebound and went down the other way before being fouled. The freshman knocked down two free throws to push the lead to 64-61. The Aggies though evened the game on the next possession on a three-point play from Schneider. CSUN went for the win on the final possession but Brown's shot went in and out as the horn sounded.
OVERTIME
Gomez, who had nine points entering overtime, hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Matadors a 70-64 edge. CSUN led 73-68 after a Diane mid-range jumper before the Aggies pulled to within two on a trey from Stefan Gonzalez. Diane missed his next shot on the ensuing possession but picked up a big steal before Mooney committed a flagrant foul. Diane knocked down two free throws and drained a jumper moments later to push the lead to 77-71 with 1:24 to play. In need of another timely bucket, Gomez would seal the win with a clutch jumper from mid-range and two late free throws in the final seconds.
GAME RECAP
Gomez moved closer to breaking the Matadors' all-time single-season 3-point record. With five 3-pointers on Saturday, Gomez moved to within one of record holder Kyle Kerlegan who made 98 in 1990-91.
