No. 21 CSUN Continues Campaign at Triton Invitational
2/8/2019 11:29:00 AM | Women's Water Polo
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.--No. 21 CSUN Water Polo returns to action this weekend at UC San Diego's Triton Invitational. The Matadors open up the invite with a rematch against No. 8 Michigan 12:30 p.m. Later that afternoon, CSUN will face either No. 22 San Diego State or No. 9 Arizona State. Both of the Matadors' matches on Saturday will take place at Canyonview Pool. Following Saturday's competition, the Matadors will meet two more teams on Sunday to conclude the tournament.
The Matadors are competing in the Triton Invitational for the 12th consecutive season this weekend. CSUN is seeking its first winning record at the tournament since 2014. Last season, CSUN went 1-3 at the invite, picking up a win over conference rival Long Beach State while suffering losses to UC Irvine, San Diego State, and UC San Diego.
It's the first competition in three weeks for the Matadors as CSUN went 1-3 to open up their season at the UCSB Winter Invite Jan. 9 The Matadors' first win came in their first game of the season to Azusa Pacific (15-14), but have lost their last three games, all of which were versus ranked opponents. Jennalyn Barthels, Tori Wilson and Kylee Jansen all have scored seven goals each to lead the team in the early part of the season. Jansen, who is only a freshman has scored in all four matches that she has played in to kick-off her collegiate career.
Wilson has been a jack of all trades in her first season with CSUN after transferring from Hartwick. In addition to her seven goals, the junior from Ontario has five steals, eight earned ejections, four assists and a block.
In the Matadors' last meeting with the Wolverines, CSUN couldn't catch up to the strong offense of Michigan as an eight goal first half proved to be too much for the Matadors to overcome in the eventual 11-5 loss. Five different Matadors scored in that match on January 19, with goalie Emma Pfister picking up nine saves.
CSUN is 1-11 all time versus the traditional powerhouse program in Michigan, as the Matadors are looking to pick up their first win against the Wolverines since 2009. Michigan is 3-4 on the season with three of their losses coming against the top three schools in the nation (USC, Stanford, UCLA). The Wolverines' leading scorer is sophomore Maddy Johnston who has 11 goals in 31 attempts. Johnston scored twice in the last meeting against CSUN.
After the Triton Invitational concludes, CSUN has a quick turnaround as the Matadors will take on Cal Baptist in Redlands on Feb. 13th.
