CSUN Falls to #17 Michigan, 2-1

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball dropped a pitcher's duel to No. 17 Michigan, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. Senior right hander Walker Armstrong tossed a season-high six innings, allowing two runs to go with eight strikeouts. Freshman Denzel Clarke supplied the Matador offense with a solo blast in the bottom of the ninth.
Only scattering four hits, Armstrong allowed one unearned run in the game, which proved to be the difference. On the flip side, Wolverine starter Tommy Henry shut out the Matadors over eight innings of work while racking up 12 strikeouts.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"Henry is a good left-handed pitcher. He got in there and threw his fastball for strikes, his change-up was really good. I tip my cap to him. He did a great job today, we just didn't make the adjustments quick enough.
Walker threw his best start of the year. He mixed well and did what Walker does well. He threw the two-seam and was able to throw his off-speed stuff for strikes. That's Walker. He does that every time out when he's healthy. I think he's getting back to healthy."
GAME BREAKDOWN
Armstrong got off to a rocky start as Ako Thomas hit a leadoff home run to begin the first inning. Dominic Clementi followed with a single but Armstrong rebounded by retiring the next three batters including the last two on strikeouts. The CSUN right hander was effective in putting away batters on strikeouts throughout the day. Through three innings, Armstrong picked up six strikeouts. He also collected up a pick off in the third inning when he erased Thomas at first base.
In the fourth, a costly CSUN error allowed the Wolverines to double their lead to 2-0. Jesse Franklin reached to start the frame on a throwing error at second base and he would later come around to score on an RBI single from Miles Lewis. After Lewis stole second base, Armstrong squashed the rally by striking out Christan Bullock and forcing Joe Donovan to fly out.
Michigan's bats would be silenced the rest of the way as Armstrong tossed two-straight shutout innings, making way for the Matador 'pen in the seventh. Blaine Traxel, Stone Shiffman and Blake Sodersten each put up scoreless frames over the last three innings.
While CSUN's pitching was strong throughout, the offense could not figure out the Wolverine's left-handed starter. Henry, who has not allowed an earned run this season, tossed another gem on Friday. Henry retired the first 13 CSUN hitters to start the game before Jayson Newman stroked a one-out single in the fifth. Austin Elder later worked a walk in the fifth but Wesley Ghan-Gibson bounced into an inning-ending double play.
The combination of Newman and Elder found success against Henry again in the eighth. Newman would double to start the inning and Elder followed with a single to put runners at the corners. However, Henry bounced back by striking out Sean Skelly and inducing another double play off the bat of Andrew Lucas.
Michigan called on its bullpen in the ninth and the Matadors would take advantage. Denzel Clarke belted a leadoff home run to cut the Michigan lead to 2-1. Robert Bullard then reached on a catcher's interference call with nobody out. A key double play though turned the inning around again. Brandon Bohning was called out for a batter's interference with Bullard on the move to second base. The twin killing would lead to a strikeout of Jose Ruiz to end the game.
GAME NOTES
With two hits on the day, Newman has reached base safely in eight-straight games. Armstrong's eight strikeouts are one shy of a career-high nine he set at Missouri State last season.
UP NEXT
Weather permitting, the Matadors continue a three-game series with Michigan on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Fans are encourage to check GoMatadors.com throughout the weekend should there be any postponements.
