49ers Defeat No. 20 CSUN in Big West Home Opener

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.-- On a windy Saturday afternoon, No. 20 CSUN Water Polo (13-13) fell in its Big West Conference Opener versus No. 15 Long Beach State 10-8 at Matador Pool. Â
Six different Matadors hit the back of the net as Maddasonne Butler led the way with three goals for CSUN. Defensively Emma Pfister tallied seven saves while the team had five steals total. Long Beach State opened up the game on a 4-0 run that CSUN couldn't quite come back from as the 49ers held off a late surge to win 10-8.
In the first quarter, the 49ers held the Matadors scoreless while adding three goals of their own. Tori Morrissey struck first for the Beach to give them a 1-0 lead, followed by Sarah Barker and junior goalie Eirini Patras.
While Long Beach State outscored the Matadors by three in the first quarter, CSUN outscored LBSU by one in the second quarter 3-2. Emma Franck notched a goal for the Matadors after being down 4-1, and after Long Beach State followed with a goal from Olivia Grim to make 5-2, Butler followed with back-to-back goals to make it a 5-3 game at halftime.
In the third quarter, LBSU's leading scorer Orsi Hertzka found the back of the net twice as the Beach outscored the Matadors 3-1. Katia Andon-Mateos was the lone scorer for CSUN.
After being down 8-4 entering the final quarter, CSUN never gave up at any point in the match, even scoring their most goals (4) in the final quarter. Grim who led the 49ers with three goals, found the back of the net in the fourth, along with teammate Annabel Harman who scored to solidify the victory for the Beach. Tori Wilson found the net in the quarter and with the strike, she added to her Big West leading 54th goal of the season. She is above Hertzka who has 51 goals on the season.

"We got off to a slow start offensively, and it cost us. I love the grit we showed playing ourselves back into the game but in the end it wasn't enough."
