Matadors Shutout Santa Clara 2-0, Clinch Series
3/23/2019 3:58:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Sophomore Wesley Moore tossed six shutout innings, striking out seven batters as CSUN Baseball (11-13) defeated Santa Clara (3-17) 2-0 to clinch a series win on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Junior Robert Bullard collected an RBI single while senior Kyle Barret and freshman Andrew Lucas each tallied two hits apiece.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"[Wesley's] slowing the game down. I think he would give away three or four-pitch blocks a year ago. Now he's giving away one pitch and he's back on it. I just think there's nothing that can replace experience when there's a guy hungry to learn. The fastball command is the biggest difference you see but he's doing much better pitch by pitch than he did a year ago."
GAME BREAKDOWN
In an old fashioned pitcher's duel, Moore and Santa Clara's Russell Grant II took turns blanking the opposition in the early innings. Moore faced the minimum through three innings while Grant retired the first six batters of the game.
The Broncos threatened in the fourth inning as Jason Dicochea singled and stole second base but Moore retired Ryan McCarthy to end the inning. In the fifth, Moore also allowed a two-out hit to Tony Boetto before sitting down Connor Henriquez for the third out.
After just picking up one hit through the first four innings, the Matadors finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth against Grant. Wesley Ghan-Gibson stroked a one-out single before reaching scoring position on a passed ball. Two batters later, Bullard collected a timely two-out single that skated up the middle. Ghan-Gibson would hustle home to break the scoreless tie.
CSUN added another run in the sixth inning to add to its lead on a well executed double steal. Back-to-back one-out singles from Kyle Barret and Austin Elder knocked out Grant from the game. Ethan Heinrich relieved Grant and was able to retire Sean Skelly for the second out of the inning. From there, Elder attempted to steal second base, forcing Grant to turn around and throw to second base. Barret would follow suit and run home as well, beating the throw to the plate to give the Matadors a 2-0 lead.
Moore continued to cruise with a shutout fifth and sixth before running into trouble in the seventh. The left hander surrendered consecutive singles to start the inning, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate. Moore would pitch into an 0-2 count against Jake MacNichols but head coach Greg Moore came out of the bullpen and decided to make a pitching change.
Blake Schriever entered the fray and promptly induced a 5-3 double play. With a runner at second base and two outs, Matt Jew would fly out to left field to end the inning.
Schriever continued his strong pitching in the eighth, retiring the side in order as he took a two-run lead to the top of the ninth. After sitting down the first two batters, Schriever went to a full count on Dicochea before throwing ball four. The Matador closer would rebound to strike out McCarthy to notch his sixth save of the season.
GAME NOTES
Barret registered his 10th multiple-hit game this season, tying Brandon Bohning for the team lead. Ghan-Gibson extended his hitting streak to seven-straight games.
Moore improved to 3-1 on the season as he allowed no walks for the first time this season. The sophomore has thrown five-straight quality starts.
