Cal Poly Defeats CSUN, 4-1 in Match Play Final

ARROYO GRANDE, Calif. — The CSUN Men's Golf team dropped a 4-1 decision to host Cal Poly in the seventh place match at the Cal Poly Match Play Championship on Tuesday at Cypress Ridge Golf Course.
In the No. 1 match Tuesday, CSUN's Paul-Louis Gachet fell in a tight contest with Thomas Lehman. Lehman squared the match with a 25-foot eagle putt at No. 13 before sinking a 17-foot putt for an eagle on the 18th hole, tying the match once again. On the first playoff hole, also the 18th, Lehman rolled in an eagle putt to win the match.
Tanner Podres defeated Tomas Helgo 2 & 1 before Gabriel Barnes picked up the Matadors' lone win on the day with a 2-up win over Peter Faragia. Sage Casaga then defeated Tomas Skajem 6 & 5 and Cade Casaga held off Michael Zhang, 2 & 1.
UC Irvine won its second Cal Poly Match Play Championship with a 3.5-1.5 triumph over UC Santa Barbara. Sacramento State claimed third place with a 3-2 victory over Utah State while Weber State earned fifth place with a 3.5-1.5 win over Southern Utah.
CSUN has two tournaments remaining before the Big West Championship gets underway Apr. 29 in Hawai'i. The Matadors will play at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz. (Apr. 8-9) followed by UC Santa Barbara Invitational (Apr. 15-16) at the Sandpiper Golf Course in Goleta.
