No. 22 CSUN Falls to No. 10 UC Irvine in Big West Action

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (13-15, 0-3 BWC) suffered a 15-6 loss to No. 10 UC Irvine (14-8, 1-1 BWC) in a Big West Conference match on Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool. Junior Tori Wilson posted a hat trick and her 12th multiple-goal performance of the season while junior Jennalyn Barthels picked up two goals of her own.
GAME BREAKDOWN
The Matadors kept pace with the Anteaters for one period before UCI took control in the second period and never looked back.
Mary Brooks opened up the scoring for the Anteaters, and Tara Prentice followed suit to put the Matadors in an early 2-0 hole. Wilson would respond for CSUN netting her first goal to cut the lead to one. CSUN would miss a penalty shot but take advantage of a scoring chance from Barthels to even the match at the 1:38 mark. UCI earned a penalty shot after an exclusion was called on Emma Franck, leading to a goal from Prentice, but Wilson tied the game at 3-3 off a power play with 35 seconds to play. The score remained tied until Piper Smith scored right before the buzzer to put UCI ahead 4-3.
The Anteaters would pull away behind an eight-goal second quarter as five different players hit the net. UCI struck for two early goals again to build a 6-3 advantage. Wilson notched her third goal of the match at the 6:19 mark but that would be the only tally for the Matadors in the eight minutes. Prentice and Danielle Ayala notched goals off power plays that stretched the lead to 8-4. CSUN would surrender four goals over the final 3:37 as UCI's lead swelled to 12-4 at the break.
The scoring slowed down the in the third period with only two striking the net but the Anteaters notched both of those goals. Toni Shackelford and Kayleigh Schultz got into the scoring act to stretch the lead to 14-4 after 24 minutes.Â
In the fourth quarter, UCI would take a 15-4 lead at the 3:58 mark before the Matadors scored the final two goals of the match in the final minute. After Butler ended the Matadors' scoring drought, Barthels found the net with three seconds left on the clock.
In the match, Sara Dempsey picked up two assists along with a steal while the trio of Franck, Wilson and Lindsey Garcia collected two steals apiece. In front of the cage, Emma Pfister had two saves.
