NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN Women's Golf team is set to open the 2019 Big West Women's Golf Championship Monday with the first of three rounds as eight teams will battle for the conference crown.
The 54-hole championship will be contested at Moorpark Country Club in Moorpark, Calif. CSUN, which won Big West Championships in 2003 and 2004, is seeking its first top-five finish since 2014 when the Matadors finished as championship runner-up to UC Davis. Ysabel Tran had CSUN's last top-10 individual finish, tying for 10th in 2017. The Matadors have had three players win or tie for the individual championship, Beth Allen in 2003 and 2004 and Clariss Guce in 2014.
Freshman Kiran Sangha comes into the championship with a team-leading 76.5 scoring average with senior Kayla Yn just a shade behind at 76.6. Senior Michelle Duan is third at 77.9 followed by junior Brianna Steger at 78.3. Sophomore Ashley Phelps rounds out the Matador lineup as she has a 79.6 scoring average in five tournaments. All four other Matadors have played in all eight tournaments in 2018-19.
CSUN players have eight top-20 individual finishes this season, highlighted by Steger's career best sixth-place finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational in Nevada (Mar. 11-12). Yn also has a top-10 finish after placing seventh at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert in September.
As a team, the Matadors have one top-five finish this season (Jackrabbit Invitational) in addition to four top-10 team performances.
The Big West Conference champion and top individual automatically qualifies for one of four NCAA regionals, scheduled for May 6-8. Sites are the Saugahatchee Country Club, in Opelika, Alabama; Tumble Creek Golf Club in Cle Elum, Washington; Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma and Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Michigan.
The 2019 NCAA Women's Golf Championship will be held at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. (May 17-22).
