4/26/2019 10:03:00 PM | Women's Tennis
INDIAN WELLS, Calif - The seventh seeded CSUN women's tennis team (14-6, 3-5 BWC) fell to the second seed Cal State Fullerton (15-5, 6-2 BWC) in a nailbiting affair that came down to a No. 1 singles tiebreaker with the Titans besting the Matadors, 4-3 in the first round of the 2019 Big West Tournament.
"We couldn't be more proud of every single one of our athletes," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "From our freshmen to our two seniors, to Emma our junior, we have athletes that don't let up and our body language didn't alter."
Fullerton began the quarterfinals by taking the doubles point. Sarah Nuno and Karla Portalatin bested the duo of Monika Van De Vondel and Skyla Alcon 6-0, in their final doubles match together. The Titans would clinch the point when Jadie Acidera and Genevieve Zeidan took on and defeated Sibel Demirbaga and Emma Roenholt at No.3Â and allowed the Titans to score the first point of the day.
Fullerton would add on to its lead on the back of Zeidan as she gave Fullerton its second point. She won her match at No.3 against Skyla Alcon 6-2,6-2.
CSUN would strike for its first points of the day when Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso reduced the Titans lead with her 6-4, 6-2 win over Caisey Lee Emery. Fraile Toboso would end her first Matadors season by finishing 17-1 in singles play, the second highest Matador winning percentage in school history behind Amy Marks, who holds the record set back in 199
3 (18-1, .947%)
"Ana is someone that makes anybody better, is a competitor and she competes with the highest integrity," said Victor. "I'm so proud of everything she does and has accomplished so far.
Nuno answered the Matadors with a win in straight sets at No.2. The Titans went up 3-1 after Nuno defeated Jolene Coetzee 6-3,6-3.
CSUN would strike back as the Matadors picked up a point when Emma Roenholt scored a 6-3,6-3 win against Acidera at No.6. Roenholt would conclude her junior season with a 15-3 record in singles. Roenholt's winning percentage of .833 would be the fifth best in CSUN history.
Demirbaga would even the scoring at three with her 17th win of her freshman campaign, as she conquered Luxizi Meng, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3 on Court No. 5. Demirbaga's record for 2019 now ends at 17-3, as her winning percentage of .850 places her fourth all time in Matador history. Fraile Toboso, Roenholt and Demirbaga have entered the history books after an impressive 2019 run.
A dual that was tied at three apiece saw both teams on the edge of their respective seats. The match came down to Court No.1 with Van de Vondel going back-and-forth with arguably one of the Titans' stronger players, Karla Portalatin in a bout that needed a tie-breaker to decide it. Van de Vondel scored the first set win 6-4 with the Titans answering back 6-3 in set two. The senior from Belgium came up just a bit short as Van de Vondel and the Matadors fell 7-4 in the tiebreaking third set.
The 2019 CSUN women's tennis team finishes with a 14-6 record and an undefeated record of 11-0 in non-conference play.
