LIHUE, Hawai'i - The CSUN Men's Golf team opened the 2019 Big West Championship with team rounds of 299 and 301 and is in seventh place after two rounds Monday at Wailua Golf Course.
At 600, the Matadors head into Tuesday's final round just a single shot behind host Hawai'i (599) and three shots behind UC Santa Barbara (597) and the top-five. UC Irvine (586) leads the team competition by three shots over Long Beach State (589).Â
"It was a frustrating day and Tomas (Helgo) not playing well didn't help but hopefully he'll rebound tomorrow," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We're the No. 9 seed and we're in seventh right now so we'll take that as a positive and look to pass a few teams tomorrow."
Senior Tomas Skajem is the low Matador player after 36 holes as he opened with an even-par 72 in round one before finishing the afternoon round at three-over 75. Skajem opened the first round on No. 10 and with the exception of a bogey at No. 15, he played an error-free opening nine holes. He then had a pair of birdies and one bogey in finishing one-under on the front nine and even-par for the round.Â
The CSUN senior added three more birdies in round two but also had two bogeys and two double bogeys in finishing at three-over 75. Skajem is currently tied for 11th at three-over 147 heading into Tuesday's final round.
Freshman Paul-Louis Gachet is one shot behind Skajem as he finished his front nine in round one in similar fashion to Skajem at one-over. Gachet opened his back nine with an eagle three at the par-5 first and a birdie at No. 2 to get to two-under. But a bogey five and a double bogey six on two of his next three holes dropped him to two-over before a birdie on his final hole got him back to one-over for the round.Â
In round two, Gachet, tied for 15th, had a single birdie and four bogeys in finishing at three-over for the round and four-over 148 for the day.
The remainder of the Matador squad is well back in the pack as Michael Zhang is tied for 31st at 10-over 154 following rounds of 76-78 and Luis Calderon is tied for 35th at 11-over 155 following scores of 82-73. Tomas Helgo, CSUN's leading scorer coming into the championship, is currently tied for 43rd at 18-over 162 (78-84).
The third and final round gets underway Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. local time. The Matadors will be paired with UC Riverside and Cal Poly for the final 18 holes.
