No. 22 CSUN Hosts No. 11 UCSB on Senior Day

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo (13-15, 0-3 BWC) continues Big West Conference action when it hosts No. 11 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at noon. Three seniors will hit Matador Pool for the final time. They will also be honored during a special pre-game ceremony. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the ceremonies.
The Matadors dropped their third-straight match to open Big West play last week to eighth-ranked UC Irvine, 15-6, at home. The Matadors kept pace with the Anteaters for one period before UCI took control in the second period and never looked back. Tori Wilson netted three goals in the defeat. Sara Dempsey picked up two assists along with a steal while the trio of Emma Franck, Wilson and Garcia collected two steals apiece.
Heading into the weekend, junior Tori Wilson remains one of the top players in the conference in several categories. Wilson leads the Big West in points (82), and is ranked second in steals (35) and in goals (57) while also being tied for third in assists (25) with fellow teammate Katia Andon-Mateos. Sophomore goalkeeper Emma Pfister has tallied a Big West-leading 205 saves this season. Junior Jennalyn Barthels is second in the league in assists right behind UC Davis' Chloe Robinson with 33 helpers. Sara Dempsey is fifth in the conference in steals (28).
A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SENIORS
For their last home game in Matador history, three seniors will hit the Northridge pool for the final time on Saturday as they will also be honored for during a special ceremony pre-game. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to honor Garcia, Hughes and Dorn.
Lindsey Garcia is finishing her career as a four-year letter winner and was a big part of CSUN's offensive and defensive attack during her time as a Matador. Garcia played in 97 matches at CSUN totaling 45 goals, 37 assists while shining defensively with 64 steals. Prior to her time as a Matador, Garcia helped her Eagle Rock high school team to four CIF City Section Championships.
Charissa Dorn came over from Santa Barbara City College where she helped the Vaqueros win consecutive Western State Conference titles from 2015-16 while also earning All-League honors. In her CSUN career she appeared in six matches total while earning her first points this season against Saint Francis with an assist and a steal against Austin College on Mar 12.
Center Daci Hughes spent two years at Cuesta College before transfering, and while there, she was named to the All-Western State Conference First Team and All-State Second Team while with the Cougars. She earned team MVP honors in 2016-17. In her Matador career, appeared in 29 matches with a career high in games played during her final season (22). She tallied 10 steals in her career while also netting eight goals in her two years in Northridge.
Dating back to 2002, the season series between UC Santa Barbara and CSUN is tied at 18 apiece with the Matadors dropping the last contest against the Gauchos in sudden-death overtime on 4/28/18 (10-9). CSUN went winless against UCSB in 2018 but in 2017, the Matadors won two matches over the span of one week (4/22-4/29).

No. 11 UCSB is 18-6 on the campaign and 1-1 in conference play with their lone win coming against UC Irvine at home on Mar. 9. Both Big West matches that UCSB has played this season have been decided by one goal. Attacker Sarah Snyder leads the team in points (61) as well as shot percentage (.589). The Gauchos will be playing their fourth consecutive game on the road as UCSB has won five out of the last six matches it has played.
