CSUN Completes Series Sweep, Downs UC Riverside 11-6
4/7/2019 4:35:00 PM | Baseball
CSUN tied a school record with 50 runs in a Big West series this weekend, which was first set against Pacific in 2003. Over the three games, the Matadors outscored the Highlanders 50-12 and out-hit the opposition 44-29. CSUN also collected 16 extra-base hits, batted .379 and slugged .690 as a team.
GAME BREAKDOWN
Sodersten ran into trouble in the first inning after the first two batters reached. The right hander battled Dean Miller to a 3-2 count before Miller was hit by a pitch. However, the home plate umpire ruled that Miller did not make an effort to move out of the way, resulting in a third strike being called. Sodersten would then rally to sit down the next two batters to keep the Highlanders off the scoreboard.
As they have done in the first two games of the series, the Matadors struck first in the home half of the first. Brandon Bohning flashed his speed on the base paths resulting in the game's first run. Bohning would steal second base with one out before moving to third base on a groundout. With Sean Skelly at the plate, Bohning made the move towards home plate. Shamus Lyons attempted to get the pitch in as fast as possible but the ball went past catcher Jacob Shanks, giving Bohning the steal of home.
CSUN added another in the second inning on a two-out hit from Denzel Clarke. Andrew Lucas and Wesley Ghan-Gibson each singled with one out, and two batters later Clarke delivered with a shot through the left side to double the Matador lead.
The Matadors were far from done as seven runs would come in over the next two innings to push the lead to 9-0.
In the third, the Matadors scored four runs on just one hit. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs before Ghan-Gibson drew another walk to force in a run. Cerny delivered the big blow with a three-run double down the left field line.
CSUN got back into the scoring column in the bottom of the fourth as Bohning stroked a two-run home run following a Robert Bullard double. Later in the inning, Lucas drove in Barret from second base on an RBI single.
Sodersten shut down the Highlanders through the first four innings, scattering just four hits over that span. In the fifth, however, the Highlanders broke up the shutout with a two-out home run from Yeager Taylor. Sodersten would bounce back, retiring four of the final five batters he faced to earn the quality start.
The Matadors took a 10-2 lead into the top of the seventh before the Highlander bats came alive. The first six Highlanders reached base safely as Miller stroked a three-run homer in the inning. UCR would pull within 10-6, forcing Schriever to enter out of the bullpen. Schriever steadied the ship nicely, retiring three of four batters to keep CSUN ahead by four.
Cerny added an insurance run with a solo blast in the bottom of the seventh and Schriever would close the door with a shutout eighth and ninth inning to earn the save.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH GREG MOORE
"When you get swept, you have to do something to get back in the race and we got back into the mix. We've just got to keep getting better and play good baseball.
Schriever is so steady. You bring him in when you need pitches to be made. Blake does that for us every outing. I'm proud of how he went about it. It all comes down to breathing. He breathes, he pitches, he breathes, he pitches. The circumstances don't change with Blake Schriever."
GAME NOTES
Lucas extended his on-base streak to 12 games and his hitting streak to 10 straight. Jose Ruiz has also reached base safely in 10 in a row.
Schriever's seven saves on the year rank seventh-best on the Matadors' all-time single-season save list. Four of his seven saves have been multiple-inning efforts.
UP NEXT
The Matadors return to the road on Friday, April 12 to begin a three-game series at Long Beach State. First pitch from Blair Field is set for 6 p.m.
