HOW IT HAPPENED
- Through seven innings, the best chance for either team to score came in the CSUN fifth. Jaymi Steward began the inning with a double to the right field gap. Gator Rascon successfully sacrificed Steward to third with a bunt. Journey Rojas reached on an infield single that went off Brittany Hitchcock, the Hawai'i pitcher's glove to give CSUN runners at the corners.
- Kira Cauley struck out before Rojas stole second. Mackenzie Babbitt walked to load the bases. Megan Stevens, the Big West leader in batting, grounded out to third for the third time in the game to leave the bases loaded.Â
- With no score after seven complete, Heather Cameron led off the top of the seventh with an infield single. Chardonnay Pantasitco reached on an infield single. A CSUN error allowed Cameron to advance to third on the play Brittnee Rossi popped out to short to bring up Nicole Lopez. Lopez singled to center to drive in Cameron.
- Alyssa Sojka singled to load the bases. Callee Heen hit a grounder to second. The Matadors went home with the ball, but the throw wasn't in time, allowing a run to score. Cheeks Ramos grounded into a 5-2 fielder's choice for the second out. Madison Veldman grounded out to wrap up the inning.
- Cauley began the CSUN eighth with a single to right. Babbitt grounded into a 3-6 fielder's choice for out number-one. Stevens singled up the middle. Crockett-Pope flew out to right where Mikaela Gandia-Mak dropped the ball, allowing Cauley to score.Â
- Aallyah Swan pinch-ran for Stevens while Maddie Johnson pinch-ran for Crockett-Pope. Jessica Alexander grounded into a 6-5 fielder's choice for the second out. Haileigh Gonzalez singled up the middle to load the bases. On the ninth pitch from Hitchcock, Steward struck out to end the game.
- Hitchcock induced 16 CSUN ground ball outs. She scattered eight hits, striking out two, walking one. Sojka was 2-for-4 to pace the Rainbow Wahine.
- Jillian James was the hard luck loser. She gave up seven hits. James did record her 200th strikeout when she struck out Pantasico to begin the Hawai'i third. James is the first CSUN pitcher since Amy Windmiller in 1994 (202) to strike out at least 200 in a season. James ended the game with three strikeouts for 201 this season. Cauley posted three of the seven CSUN hits.
ACCORDING TO HEAD COACH TAIRIA FLOWERS
- "It was a good battle. Both teams did some things well and both of us probably need to shore up some other things. We put ourselves in a position to beat a good team and we just fell a little bit short. Hopefully tomorrow we will come out motivated and excited to play."Â Â
