U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - The CSUN Men's Golf team opened the 2019-20 season Friday and is sixth after round one of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at the Eisenhower Golf Course.
The Matadors carded a team round of (+3) 291 on Friday and are just a single stroke out of the top-five. The host Air Force Falcons lead the 18-team field at (-9) 279, three shots better than second-place Wyoming (282).
In his first collegiate tournament, freshman Eirik Thomassen is CSUN's low scorer through 18 holes after finishing at one-under 71. Thomassen, currently tied for 13th, was two-under after seven holes and moved to three-under after a birdie at No. 4. But a pair of bogeys over his final five holes dropped him back to one-under for the day.
Senior Michael Zhang and freshman Mats Ege are both tied for 31st at one-over 73. Ege matched Thomassen with four birdies but also had a pair of double bogeys in his round. Zhang had a consistent round with a single birdie and 15 pars on his way to a round of 73. Junior Blake Brothers, also playing his first tournament as a Matador, is currently tied for 43rd at two-over 74 and sophomore Tomas Helgo is tied for 88th after an opening-round six-over 78.
"It was a good start to the fall," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We're talented enough that I think we should have at least one player under par every round. The depth we have this season with five or six guys are pushing each other every tournament is going to make us better."
CSUN will be paired with Drake for the second round which gets underway Saturday morning at 7:30 local time.
