SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo split its two first matches on day one of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite on Friday at Campus Pool. CSUN came from behind to edge No. 25 Azusa Pacific 7-6 before falling to No. 2 UCLA 16-6 in the afternoon game. Senior Tori Wilson and sophomore Kylee Jansen paced the Matadors on the offensive end with three goals apiece on the day while freshmen goalkeepers Meghan Lopez and Piper McCulloch both made their first career appearances in front of the cage.

Jennalyn Barthels got the Matadors on the scoreboard first at the 5:24 mark of the first quarter before Azusa Pacific scored the next two to take the lead. Wilson would even the match but the Cougars controlled the final two minutes and took a 4-3 lead after eight minutes. CSUN held the Cougars to just one tally in the second quarter but the Matadors went scoreless in the eight-minute session.
After trailing 5-3 at the half, the Matadors' Madasonne Butler and Wilson scored the first goals, both even-strength, to tie the game at 5-5. Milena Ortiz tallied her third goal of the morning to briefly give the Cougars a one-goal edge but the final minute of the third quarter belonged to CSUN. Jansen evened the match with 22 seconds remaining then Helena Sandhagen gave CSUN a 7-6 lead with a buzzer beater. In the fourth, CSUN withstood two 6-on-5 possessions and held APU without a goal to hold on for the one-goal victory.
