SANTA BARBARA, Calif.---No. 22 CSUN Water Polo wrapped up the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite on Saturday by splitting its final two matches. After nearly upsetting No. 7 Michigan in an 8-7 loss in the morning game, the Matadors rebounded with a 14-3 win over Ottawa (Ariz.) in the afternoon match. The quartet consisting of seniors Tori Wilson, Katia Andon-Mateos and Dafne Garcia, sophomore Kylee Jansen ad freshman Helena Sandhagen led the way offensively, scoring three goals apiece between the two matches.
In all, 11 different Matador tallied goals including a pair scoring their first career goals. In front of the net, freshman Meghan Lopez tallied 10 saves in the one-goal loss to Michigan while freshman Piper McCulloch had 12 saves against Ottawa.
MICHIGAN RECAP:
Annie Rankin kicked off the scoring in the opening minute of the match before Jansen squared the game on the next possession. The Matadors took advantage of a 6-on-5 possession to take a brief 2-1 lead on a goal from Wilson but the Wolverines tied the match once more on a goal from Ava Morrant. Michigan took a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter but could not take advantage of two power plays in the final minutes. In the second, CSUN fell behind by two before Jansen notched her second goal of the half. Wilson also got into the scoring column in the second period, however CSUN went into the break trailing 5-4.
Despite falling behind by three goals in the third quarter, the Matadors would not fold against the seventh-ranked Wolverines. Jennalyn Barthels scored on a power play and Sandhagen hit the back of the next with seven seconds remaining in the period to bring CSUN to within 7-6. In the fourth, Barthels tied the match up at 7-7 with her second goal of the game. Both teams withstood two power plays before the Wolverines gained possession with under three minutes to play. Kayla Barone would put Michigan back in front with her first tally with 2:24 on the clock. CSUN looked for the equalizer in the closing minutes but came up just short, falling by one goal.
Wilson recorded three assists and three steals while Andon-Mateos and Alessia Marquez racked up two assists apiece. Lopez also chipped in with four steals at goalkeeper.
"Our team defense continues to be our strength, holding the No. 7 team to eight goals," said head coach Matt Warshaw. "But we missed some opportunities on the offensive end early in the game that came back to haunt us."

Facing an Ottawa team playing in just its third match in team history, CSUN took control early and never looked back. The Matadors scored five times in the first quarter, highlighted by multiple goals from Andon-Mateos and Sandhagen. In the second quarter, Dafne Garcia and Kaitlyn Moguel each got into the scoring act as CSUN opened up a 7-2 lead.
The third quarter would perhaps be the best for CSUN in the match with the Matadors outscoring the Spirit 5-0. All five goals came on even strength possessions with Garcia, Wilson, Jansen, Emma Franck and Lacey Hall each picking up a goal. The Matadors added two more goals in the fourth period to close out a wire-to-wire 14-3 victory.
Franck picked up four steals and two field blocks in the match while Hall and Barthels had two assists. In front of the cage, McCulloch recorded three steals.
"Anytime a new college program is launched it's exciting for our sport," said Warshaw. "It won't be long until this Ottawa program is competing at a high level."
