
#19 CSUN Competes at Beach Invite on Saturday

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 19 CSUN Water Polo (2-2) returns to the pool for a pair of matches on Saturday at the Beach Invite, hosted by Long Beach State. The Matadors take on No. 24 Azusa Pacific at 9:45 a.m before squaring off with La Verne at 12:45 p.m. at Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center. Live stats will be available for both matches.
The Matadors had an impressive showing at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invite last weekend. Finishing 2-2, the Matadors knocked off nationally-ranked Azusa Pacific 7-6 on Friday and beat Ottawa (Ariz.) 14-3 on Saturday. CSUN would also take No. 7 Michigan to the limit on Saturday before falling 8-7 in a tight battle. No. 2 UCLA would also prevail over the Matadors 16-6 at the event.
Senior Tori Wilson and sophomore Kylee Jansen scored a combined six goals apiece in the four matches to lead the Matador offense. Wilson and Jansen hit goals in each game and also picked up two goals against Michigan. Freshman Helena Sandhagen notched five total goals in her first collegiate matches while the senior trio of Jennalyn Barthels, Dafne Garcia and Katia Andon-Mateos all had four goals apiece. Sophomore Alessia Marquez led the Matadors in assists with six on the weekend.
On the defensive side, Barthels had eight steals followed by Wilson who had seven. In the cage, a pair of Matador freshmen made their collegiate debuts against three Top 25 teams. Meghan Lopez notched 26 saves as she faced Azusa Pacific and Michigan. Piper McCulloch also tallied 19 saves of her own in games against UCLA and Ottawa. The combination of Lopez and McCulloch posted a 8.25 goals-against-average.
The Matadors are 12-0 all-time against Azusa Pacific, which includes last week's 7-6 victory. CSUN rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the second half against the Cougars last Friday, outscoring the opposition 4-1 in the third quarter to take the lead. Jansen and Wilson had two goals in the win while Lopez racked up 16 saves in front of the cage. The last three matches between the two teams have all been one-goal decisions.
CSUN is 3-1 in the all-time series with La Verne. The Matadors have won the last three in the series but all of those games have taken place from 2011 to 2012. CSUN prevailed by a 22-7 margin in the teams' last match in April 2012.
The Cougars went 1-1 last week at the UCSB Winter Invite, which included a 24-8 victory over Ottawa. Sophomore Milena Guzman Ortiz, who had a hat trick against CSUN, picked up eight goals in the two matches last weekend. Junior Britni Tisdale had a four-goal effort against Ottawa.
Kicking off its season this week, La Verne is ranked No. 5 in the Division III national poll. The Leopards went 11-14 and 9-5 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference last season. Junior Jassmine Kezman scored a team-high 82 goals in 2019 while senior Shelby Garcia racked up 176 saves and a 9.90 GAA in net.
