LONG BEACH, Calif.—The CSUN women's tennis team opened the Spring portion of the 2019-20 schedule by entering the Long Beach State Winter Invitational this past weekend.
The tournament which was comprised of CSUN, Long Beach State, Portland, and Portland State was structured in a hidden dual format, with each team playing doubles and singles against different schools each day until all four schools have competed against one another. Following the completion of the tournament, a singles and doubles winner were declared based on results and location in the lineup, with more weight given to players in the top flights.
As a result of this declaration, CSUN's Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso were named the winners in doubles. The Matador duo won all three matches in which they played. Coetzee and Fraile Toboso defeated Long Beach State's Natalia Munoz and Zara Lennon 6-3 on day one. Coetzee and Fraile Toboso handed Jelena Lukic and Anna Oberg of Portland a 6-2 defeat on day two. Coetzee and Fraile Toboso defeated Jacinta Milenkoski and Alli Valk of Portland State 6-1 on Sunday.
Coetzee, Fraile Toboso, and Ekaterina Repina each went 2-1 for the Matadors playing in what would be considered the No. 1 flight during the tournament. Natalia Munoz of Long Beach State was declared the singles' winner.
"Jolene and Ana communicate so well with each other," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "James and I are proud of our team's effort and character. This was great preparation for the regular season. I am looking forward to getting started next weekend.
The Matadors begin dual play Jan. 25 when CSUN hosts a doubleheader. The Matadors face Marymount (Calif.) at 10 a.m. before taking on Westmont at 2 p.m.
