
#21 CSUN Extends Winning Streak to Five with Two Victories at CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo (6-2) picked up two more victories at California Baptist on Friday to stretch its winning streak to five-straight games. The Matadors pulled out an 11-10 sudden-death victory over the host Lancers in the opener and CSUN never trailed in a 12-6 win over Fresno Pacific to conclude the day. Sophomore Kylee Jansen recorded two hat tricks to finish with a team-high six goals on Friday. Senior Katia Andon-Mateos added five goals in the victories including a game-winning goal to defeat CBU. In front of the cage, freshman Meghan Lopez played strong again in net, racking up 15 saves against the Lancers.

The Matadors and Lancers traded goals in the first quarter with Jansen scoring twice. In the second period, CSUN took the lead behind a five-meter penalty shot from Helena Sandhagen while the Matadors held the Lancers off the scoreboard over eight minutes to lead 3-2 at the break.
After a one-goal second period, the teams exploded for six combined tallies in the third. The Matadors would open up a 6-2 lead after goals from Alessia Marquez, Tori Wilson and Jansen but the Lancers answered back with two-straight goals to pull within two. CSUN earned a penalty shot with a minute to play in the third and took a 7-4 lead after Jennalyn Barthels hit the back of the net. CBU controlled the first four minutes of the fourth period with three-straight goals, capped by a game-tying strike from Kira O'Donell. With under two minutes to play in regulation, McKenzie Beardsley picked up a go-ahead goal but the Lancers responded with another tying goal from Jamie Hutton to send the match into overtime.
The teams came up empty in the first three-minute overtime before Andon-Mateos gave the Matadors a 10-9 lead with 53 seconds to play in the second overtime. Twenty seconds later, the Lancers earned a five-meter penalty shot. O'Donell squared the game for CBU, sending the match to a sudden-death overtime. The game went through a first sudden-death period without any goals before Andon-Mateos ended the match with a game-winning strike with 1:51 on the clock in the next period.
Barthels tallied five assists and one field block while Wilson picked up two assists of her own in the win.
"CBU is a good team that always presents matchup issues for us," said head coach Matt Warshaw. "But in the end, our depth was key today with three players who couldn't finish the game due to penalties. Our bench really came up with a big performance."

CSUN-FRESNO PACIFIC RECAP
Andon-Mateos began the second game like she ended the first game, with a goal, to give CSUN an early lead. The Matadors would break a 2-2 tie near the end of the first quarter behind a late strike from Beardsley. Fresno Pacific tied the match near the midway mark of the second quarter on a goal from Katie Kisling. CSUN answered back on an even-strength strike from Sandhagen. The Matadors then opened up a 6-3 lead at the break behind goals from Wilson and Jansen.
In the third, the Matadors had their biggest scoring period of the afternoon with five goals. Andon-Mateos scored on a five-meter penalty shot while Jansen scored twice to help the Matadors stretch their lead to 11-5 after 24 minutes. Sandhagen provided the Matadors with their only offense in the fourth period while CSUN held the Sunbirds at bay for a six-goal win.
Freshman Piper McCulloch notched nine saves in front of the cage to go with two steals. Wilson and Barthels each had three assists and two steals.
"It's tough to have a short turnaround and our team handled it well," said Warshaw. "After a slow start, we got going in the second half and came out with a victory."
