
#20 CSUN Falls to UCSD, Defeats LIU to Open Home Schedule

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 20 CSUN Water Polo (13-5, 0-1 Big West) split its first two home matches of the season at Matador Pool on Saturday. The Matadors dropped their Big West opener to No. 10 UC San Diego 12-9 but bounced back for a 13-9 win over LIU. Senior Tori Wilson scored eight goals over the two matches including a six-goal effort in the win over LIU while senior Madasonne Butler netted five total goals. Three Matadors saw action in front of the cage led by freshman Meghan Lopez who had nine saves against UCSD.

The Matadors received early goals from Katia Andon-Mateos and Butler to take a 2-1 lead in the opening two minutes. Moments later, a costly CSUN penalty resulted in the tying goal from Ciara Franke near the midway mark of the first period. The Tritons then added goals from Grace Pevehouse and Taylor Onstott to build a 4-2 lead. CSUN answered with a strike from Wilson but the Tritons would take a 5-3 lead on another goal from Franke. The Matadors took advantage of a 6-on-5 advantage and picked up a goal from Wilson to pull within one in the second period. However, the the final minutes of the half belonged to the Tritons as a 3-0 run quickly put the Matadors in a four-goal hole. Butler scored her second goal of the match with 1:21 on the clock but CSUN went into the break trailing 8-5.
CSUN created scoring opportunities in the third period but the Tritons would thwart every attack. The Matadors earned a power play with 3:44 on the clock, however they came up empty on a blocked shot from Butler. Meanwhile, the Tritons added to their lead with a strike from Sydney Boland. Trailing 9-5 entering the fourth period, the Matadors scored two-straight times to quickly pull within two. Kaitlyn Moguel scored early in the fourth and Andon-Mateos hit the net on a penalty shot. UCSD though took advantage of a power play of its own and went up by three on a goal from Tera Richardson. Onstott and Maddie Bockman would also score goals to put the Tritons ahead 12-7. Despite late goals from Helena Sandhagen and Butler, a late Matador rally was not in the cards.
The trio of Jennalyn Barthels, Andon-Mateos and Wilson all had two assists apiece.
"This was a good battle but we came up short," said head coach Matt Warshaw. "Our offense created quite a few open shots but we didn't finish the opportunities. UCSD is a Top-10 team and we'll hopefully get a rematch at the Big West Tournament."

The first quarter would only see three goals but CSUN picked up two of those tallies. McKenzie Beardsley got the Matadors' offense started to even the match before Yuri Cowie gave CSUN a 2-1 in the final minute of the first period. After the Sharks squared the match early in the second quarter, Sandhagen pushed CSUN back in front on a power play goal. LIU would tie the game once more before Wilson went to work offensively. She netted two-straight goals and scored a third with 3:08 left before halftime. Still a one goal game in the final minute of the second period, Cowie netted another timely goal to make it a 7-5 game at intermission.
The Sharks continued to keep the game close, scoring again in the opening minute of the third period to pull within one. The senior tandem of Wilson and Butler finally gave the Matadors some separation with consecutive goals. Alessia Marquez would stretch the lead even further with her first goal of the afternoon. Wilson added to her goal total near the end of the period to give CSUN a 11-7 lead. In the fourth, Wilson notched her sixth goal of the match late in the fourth period as both squads scored two goals apiece. Butler also scored her second goal to help hold off the Sharks.
Barthels dished out four assists while Wilson and Marquez each registered two. Sara Dempsey picked up two steals. In goal, Piper McCulloch played the first half and had five saves and Emma Pfister saw action over the final two periods, tallying four saves.
"Such a great thing when we add more women's college water polo programs," said Warshaw. "Getting a chance to play them in their inaugual year is something special. As for the game, our team rebounded nicely from an emotional Big West game earlier today and earned a victory."
