#21 CSUN Continues Big West Play at #8 UCSB

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---No. 21 CSUN Water Polo (13-5, 0-1 Big West) hits the road for a Big West Conference match with No. 8 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at noon. Live stats will be available for the match.
The Matadors opened up their home schedule last Saturday. CSUN played two matches at Matador Pool, which included its Big West opener against No. 10 UC San Diego. The Matadors fell to UCSB 12-9 but rebounded with a 13-9 win over LIU.
Senior Madasonne Butler led the Matadors with three goals against the 10th-ranked Tritons while seniors Katia Andon-Mateos and Tori Wilson each chipped in with two goals apiece. In the late game, Wilson netted six goals against LIU and the combination of Butler and junior Yuri Cowie scored two apiece. Wilson's six goals against the Sharks are tied for the fifth-most goals scored in a game in team history, which matches her career-high she set against California Baptist last season. In net, all three of the Matador goalkeepers saw action, led by freshman Meghan Lopez who had nine saves against UCSD.
Wilson has taken over the lead in goals scored with 31 heading into the weekend while Andon-Mateos is a close second with 29 tallies. Two other Matadors have scored 20 or more goals as Helena Sandhagen has 22 and Butler has 20. In the Big West, senior Jennalyn Barthels leads the league in assists (32) while Wilson has a conference-leading 35 steals. In the points department, Wilson is fifth in the conference with 58 and Andon-Mateos is seventh with 52. At goalkeeper, Lopez is fifth in saves (103) and ninth in goals-against-average (7.08) while freshman Piper McCulloch is seventh in the Big West in saves (71).
UCSB leads CSUN 19-18 in the all-time series, which dates back to 2002. The Gauchos have won seven of the last nine meetings including the last three in the series. CSUN's last win over UCSB took place in April 2017 at the Big West Tournament. The Matadors are looking to snap a six-match skid at UCSB and post their first win on the road in the series since April 2010.
The eighth-ranked Gauchos are 10-8 on the season and are opening up Big West play against the Matadors. UCSB has two Top 10 wins this season, which include UCLA (No. 2) and UC San Diego (then-ranked No. 8). Sarah Snyder leads the Gauchos with 38 goals, which ranks sixth-best in the Big West. Amanda Legaspi has 18 goals on the year to go with six assists. In front of the cage, Kenzi Snyder has recorded 164 saves while Becca Buck has racked up 46 saves.
