2/7/2020 5:58:00 PM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN defeated the University of Pacific for the ninth consecutive time as the Matadors defeated the Tigers 5-2 in women's tennis action Friday afternoon.
CSUN took the doubles point as Jolene Coetzee and Ana Isabel Fraile Toboso defeated Maya Lopez and Elise Frigout 6-3. Ekaterina Repina and Jacquie Tan posted a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles against Karina Vyrlan and Anna Vinolas Ramos. With the point clinched, No. 3 doubles was left unfinished.
Vinolas Ramos got the Tigers on the board with a straight sets victory (6-2, 6-3) at No. 6 singles against Lisa-Marie Wurst. Tan put the Matadors into the lead for good when she swept Frigout 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.
Coetzee had to go to three sets against Dohee Lee at No. 3 singles, but came away with a 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 victory. Fraile Toboso clinched the dual at No. 4 singles. She dropped the first set to Zoe Eberle 3-6, and was down 4-0 in the second. She fought back, winning 11 consecutive games, taking the second set 6-4, and blanking Eberle 6-0 in the third.
Repina fell to No. 75 Klara Kosen in three sets at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6. The dual concluded at No. 5 singles when Emma Roenholt defeated Lopez in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 10-2.
"This was a very hard fought win against a very tough team," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. I'm proud of everyone's effort. (Ekatarina) played one of the top freshman in the country and came back to be within two points of the match. Jacquie was a great energy source all day and Jolene finished her matches brilliantly. Ana is just a gamer. Down a set and 4-0 and came back to win 11 games in a row. Emma is our lead captain and showed how tough a competitor she is."
Playing for the first time since Pacific (1-1) left the Big West for the West Coast Conference, the CSUN winning streak, dates back to Mar. 25, 2007 when the Tigers defeated the Matadors 4-3 in Northridge.
The Matadors (2-1) host Oregon (4-1) next Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
