SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The CSUN Women's Volleyball had its season-high two-match win streak snapped in a straight-set loss to UC Santa Barbara Tuesday night at The Thunderdome.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 as the host Gauchos improve to 12-9 overall and 8-1 in the Big West. The Matadors, who had won two straight and three of their last six matches, slip to 4-15 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Lexi McLeod led CSUN with nine kills and nine digs, hitting .350 on 20 swings while sophomore Taylor Orshoff added seven kills (.136), two blocks and one dig.
• Seniors Seyvion Waggoner and Nicole Nevarez each added six kills with Waggoner hitting .385 on 13 attacks while Nevarez (.080) added seven digs and one ace.
• Setter Madison Klungel handed out 14 assists to go with three digs while Carisa Barron posted 13 assists, four digs and served two of CSUN's three aces.
• The Gauchos would out-hit the Matadors .408 (52-12-98) to .216 (34-13-97) while also out-blocking CSUN 9.0 to 4.0. UCSB had 46 team digs to 32 for the Matadors.
• Briana McKnight was the only player in the match to reach double figures with 10 kills on .600 hitting to lead the Gauchos.
COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"We had trouble stopping their hitters, Santa Barbara runs a really fast offense that we don't see in our gym. We did give ourselves some opportunities but we just couldn't convert them into points."
FIRST SET
The Matadors held a 10-9 advantage following a UCSB hitting error when the hosts scored three straight to take a 12-10 lead. After the Gauchos committed a service error pulling CSUN within 12-11, UCSB scored the next six points, the final four coming on blocks, to open up an 18-11 cushion. The Matadors would get back within four (22-18) late following Barron's ace but the Gauchos would close out a 25-19 win.
SECOND SET
After hitting .030 in the opening set, the Matadors bounced back to hit .378 in set two but the Gauchos would hit .486 to pull out a 25-21 win. After UCSB opened up an early 8-4 lead, CSUN used a 7-3 run to close to within 11-10. Still trailing by three at 16-13, Waggoner's kill propelled CSUN on a 4-0 run that forced a Gaucho timeout with the Matadors leading 17-16. CSUN still led by one at 19-18 following a McLeod kill and the teams would battle down the stretch to a 21-21 tie. But UCSB would score the final four points of the set in taking the 25-21 win.
THIRD SET
The Matadors scored the first point of the final set but would not hold the lead again. The hosts scored three straight and despite CSUN closing to within one on two occasions, UCSB slowly began to pull away. After an Orshoff kill pulled the Matadors within 12-10, the Gauchos went on an 8-1 run to open up an insurmountable 20-11 lead. UCSB's lead was never less than eight points down the stretch before the Gauchos closed out the 25-15 win.
