Hawai'i Holds Off Matadors in Four Sets in Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Senior Nicole Nevarez put down a team-high 13 kills but the CSUN Women's Volleyball fell to visiting Hawai'i in four sets in a Big West Conference match Saturday night at The Matadome.
Set scores were 25-15, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 as the visiting Rainbow Wahine improve to 12-6 overall and 9-1 in the Big West. The Matadors slip to 4-16 overall and 3-7 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Nevarez had a team-high 13 kills (.200) along with six digs and one ace while sophomore Taylor Orshoff added 10 kills (.139) and two digs.
• Lauryn Anderson and Seyvion Waggoner each chipped in seven kills with Anderson hitting .417 on 12 swings. Waggoner hit .042 on 24 attacks to go with three digs.
• Setter Carisa Barron had 24 assists to lead the Matadors while Madison Klungel handed out 19 assists. The CSUN duo also combined for 11 digs and two aces.
• The visiting Rainbow Wahine out-hit the Matadors .304 (51-13-125) to .169 (51-27-142) while also out-blocking CSUN 13.0 to 4.0. The Matadors held a slight edge in team digs (54-53) as Makayla Bradford led all players with 20 digs for the Matadors.
• Martyna Leoniak led Hawai'i with a match-high 15 kills, hitting .469 on 32 attacks to go with 10 digs.

"I thought we battled against a very good Hawai'i team tonight. I have seen a big improvement since the start of conference and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do in the second half of the conference season."
FIRST SET
After the lead see-sawed through the early part of the opening set, Hawai'i engineered a 6-2 run to open up a 10-6 lead. The with Leoniak at the service line, the Rainbow Wahine rolled off six straight points to force a CSUN timeout at 19-13. The lead swelled to double digits at 23-13 before Hawai'i won going away by the score of 25-15.
SECOND SET
The second set featured 11 ties and four lead changes as neither team could forge more than a two-point edge until a Rainbow Wahine hitting error put CSUN in front 20-17. The Matadors continued to put the pressure on despite a late Hawai'i surge as kills by Anderson, Nevarez and Waggoner sent CSUN to the 25-22 win.
THIRD SET
Hawai'i scored eight of the first 10 points in the third set and would not trail in the set. After hitting .364 in the second set, CSUN struggled to a .000 clip while Hawai'i connected at a .500 hitting clip.
FOURTH SET
The Matadors overcame an early 8-5 Hawai'i lead as a 6-2 scoring run, capped by a Nevarez kill, put the Matadors in front 11-10. CSUN still led by one at 12-11 after an Orshoff kill when the visitors went on a 5-1 run to take the lead for good at 16-13. The Matadors rallied back to knot the score three times down the stretch, the last at 19-19, before Hawai'i claimed six of the final eight points to take a 25-21 win.
UP NEXT
The Matadors head back out on the road for four of the next six matches beginning next Friday (Oct. 29) at RIMAC Arena as CSUN takes on UC San Diego at 7 p.m.
