SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – One day after dominating CSU Bakersfield for its first Big West win, the CSUN Women's Volleyball team ran into a hot-hitting Cal Poly team Saturday afternoon as the Mustangs posted a straight-set win over the Matadors at Mott Athletics Center.
Set scores were 25-12, 25-23, 25-14 as Cal Poly improves to 5-10 overall and 3-1 in the Big West. The loss drops the Matadors to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

COACH SUSIE TERRUSA SAID
"I thought we came out flat and not ready to play today. We played well in the second set and had our chances to win but didn't take advantage of the opportunities. Cal Poly is a good team but we didn't play up to our potential."
FIRST SET
The hosts jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening set and would not look back. Kills by Lauryn Anderson and Nevarez pulled CSUN within one at 4-3 and the Matadors remained within one at 5-4 following a Nieko Thomas put-away. A Cal Poly service error kept the margin at one (6-5) before the Mustangs outscored the Matadors 7-3 over the next 10 points to force a CSUN timeout at 13-8. A McLeod kill kept the Matadors within striking distance at 16-12 before the hosts closed the set on a 9-0 run to take a 25-12 decision.
SECOND SET
After an Anderson kill gave CSUN a 14-13 lead, Cal Poly answered with a 3-0 run to force a Matador timeout at 16-14. CSUN then countered with a 4-1 run, capped by a McLeod solo block, to force a Mustang timeout with the Matadors on top 18-17. The two teams would battle to a 20-20 tie when Cal Poly used a CSUN hitting error and a pair of Stockham kills to open up a 23-20 lead. A kill by Nevarez followed by Barron's ace cut the deficit to 23-22 but following a Mustang timeout, the hosts won two of the final three points to seal a 25-23 win.
THIRD SET
After trailing by three at 5-2, a McLeod kill capped a 5-3 CSUN run which trimmed the lead to 8-7. The hosts then engineered a 10-3 run that all but sealed the set as Cal Poly opened up an 18-10 advantage. The Mustangs were whistled for a setting error pulling the Matadors within six (20-14) but CSUN would get no closer to drop the final set, 25-14.
UP NEXT
The Matadors return to The Matadome next weekend to open a two-match homestand Friday against Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
